Why has the CD/DVD player begun to pulse?

Hello,
My CD player on a Dell Inspiron laptop with Windows 7 has begun to pulse! Any suggestions, please?

what exactly do you mean 'pulse'?

If by 'pulse' you mean a new odd sound, such as a grinding or zipping, then one of the components might be slightly damaged or misaligned.

If the drive can perform all its normal operations and your discs are not getting scratched, then don't worry about it. Otherwise, you might have to get to drive replaced.

Thank you for your reply. When I put a disc in it takes some time whirring etc before it starts. When it starts the sound pulses - on and off and is incomprehensible to listen to. The discs themselves show no signs of marking or scratching. The problem only arises with CDs - not with DVDs which play without a problem - so far!!
