My dad and I are working on a house. This is the first time he has taken a project with LAN through to the end (meaning the cabinet part). He wants to buy the Leviton cabinet stuff, but I was unimpressed. I priced it out online, and it was $700+. I would like to put in a 19" rack to make it a little more standard. Here's what I found. Any suggestions as to what I've got or where to buy? If it doesn't have a price, it is a second option... The guy has about 18 phone, 16 Network, and 14 Coax ports through the house.

Are you wiring EVERYTHING, ie Cable, Phone, Internet, Alarm, Doorbell, Music, Video, etc?

I can't answer your question, but I am curious.

My parents have thier home wired from top to bottom and it's a real pain when something breaks.

The wiring we did was for Phone, Cable TV, and Ethernet.

I'm not quite ready to do one of those smart houses yet, but that would be wild!!

I don't recommend it at all. They require a specialist to service it since nobody knows what the hell is going on, and when something goes wrong it's a real pain in the ass as well as really expensive. At one point the doorbell stopped working. Then the doorbell worked but the intercom didn't work. Then the phones stopped working as well as the doorbell. Then they found out they needed a special reciever to play music in the house. Then a knob that controls the volume broke. To get the phone intercom working they needed new phones. The alarm works except when I tried using it. That was brilliant since I didn't know the password when they called after I set it off.

It sucks. You really need to be a geek to want and operate a so called smart house. I think my parents are finally cool with it but I'm not sure if they ever got the doorbell working.

i am currently developing a kit for homes that will turn an ordinary home into a smart home.

30 min setup time, and a cost of under $100 of parts.

it will basicly monitor all home appliances and how much power they use, and be able to turn off or on anything around the home without rewiring anything.

it is networked for basic data transfer but doesn't use wireless, and doesn't use any extra network cables. ;)

if you put in only ethernet capabilities, then later in a few years or so you will be able to have full smart home capabilities without rewiring anything. (or re-wiring only a few sockets, with a simple alteration only behind the socket, not in the actual guts of the house, for even more useage than the kit provides)

:D :D
