Ya know, I downloaded this utility and have it running on a CeleronD that is overclocked to 3.5 GHz. with the stock fan and it never shows any throttling even though I'm running it 24/7 at 100% load on the UD Project. That surprises me a little.
The CPU temps stay around 50 C so I guess Intel is doing some things on their newer silicon to cool them down some.
Wow... took me a while to get back to this post - sorry about that! (Been a busy week I guess...)
Mine was a 335 originally set to run at 2.8 GHz. I bought it on sale at Fry's for $99 which included a cheap ECS motherboard based on the Intel 848 chipset. I have no CPU voltage adjustment on this board, so I can't get past 3.5 GHz. - but it does that on the standard 1.3 volts!
In terms of performance, I'm not sure what you want... the synthetic benchmarks (Sandra, etc.) put it right up there with the big boys in the 3.2 to 3.6 range. Subjectively, it feels very fast. I have it crunching UD work-units but the times it puts out seem a bit slower than my Athlon XP's - but it's a little tough to tell since the UD work units have a lot of variability. Although none of my P4's ever stack up very well against the Athlons in Distributed Computing projects.
With motherboard I can difine what temp I want the CPU to throttle. As well as how much I want it to throttle. However this is a clock speeds throttle. The throttling we are talking about here inserts empty slots between instructions rather than changing the clock speed. So it is not controlled by the motherboard.
Right, the amazing and famous THG-video With my board i can only choose a max. temp shutdown I think, I never enabled the on-board thermalthrotteling.
Normally my pc just reboots when overheatig. But back when I had the stock cooler, I was able to make it shut down my turning the fanspeed down under full load (or, actually forgetting to turn it up)
right..tnx. What's with the dual thermals on the E0 stepping then?
When I used the program though, the throttelinggrid was like darkred'ed out, instead of light-red'ed active. I'll try it again.
hm.. I tried again with the log and on full load. Turned down my case and cpu fans, Aida32 reads 78c and my external probe 56c, no throttle But then again it's an abit IC7, which is known to read 10-20c too high
