Hello,
in your explanation of the notebook HDD replacement (upgrade), you just state to "...boot from your Windows disc. Select 'Repair your computer' and pick backup set you created." You do not specify if the new HDD has to be formated before restoring the backup. Are we to assume that the repair procedure within Windows will automatically detect that the new HDD is not formated and will do so automatically. The article I'm reading is on the link below:

Register or log in to remove.

What you'll want to do is install the new HDD and then insert the windows disk or your back up disk and install away. In either case, there should be an option where you can format the drive- select NTFS.
