I posted this in the overclock section but no love. I figured with a little more flow to this forum maybe i could get some help.

I looked around and i see a little of what i want and its still missing a lot.

I want to get a A64 3000+ Winchester and OC it. BUT i need to know what motherboard would provide the best and easiest OC.

1. I think from what i have read in threads and elsewhere that the MSI K8N Neo2 Plat....is that right?

2. Ram, i know i need some headroom above PC3200 obviusly. Do i want 1gig of Ballistix PC4000? Or is there a cheaper option that is better or an equal priced option thats better?

3. Cooling. Will i need something other then stock cooling? if so what HSF/thermal paste is recomended?!?

. I know some, but not a lot about OCing. Is there a site or someplace that would kind of break this down step by step? I am not looking for massive OCing like 3Ghz, but a nice 2.4-2.6Ghz would be perfect for my first time.

Here's a site with a lot of info on overclocking;
http://www.overclockers.com/home.asp

I've heard good things about the MSI board as well. As for memory, again, I'd read some reviews before you buy, especially with that board to see which memory works the best. Stock cooling can get you some reasonable overclocks, but it just depends on how far you want to go...

..oh yeah - and to try to answer your Q's:

1 - any Nforce 3 Mobo will do nicely
2 - I'm no expert - but Ballistix is good.
3 - Stock will be good up to 2.4, I think u'd need something better for higher O/C.

Like my water cooling for example

When I get my 90nm A64 - 2.8Ghz here I come!!!

I tried posting a similar question regarding the memory, but I got no replies. Anyways, here is what I believe:

1. Yes, the MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum seems to be a great motherboard for overclockers.
2. Get the Athlon 64 3200+ and some cheap Corsair PC3200 CAS 2.5. The multiplier on this CPU is set at 10x. This way, you can set the FSB to 240 (Hypertransport Multiplier @ 4x = 960MHz), set the memory setting at PC2700 which is basically a 166/200 divider, that will immediately give you a 200MHz speed on your memory (240 * 166/200). The result will be 2.4GHz (Athlon 64 3800+).
- Of course you can get PC4000 and run your memory at 240MHz as well instead of 200MHz, but I don't think the extra performance justifies the added cost ($268 vs $146).
3. From what I've read, 2.4GHz should be quite easilly attainable with stock cooling. After all, you can try and only if you fail then spend the extra money on more advanced cooling solutions.
