Protein Folding - Team 40051

Folding@Home is a LARGE GRID COMPUTING effort. Presently over 100,000 computers and over 400,000 people have contributed. Present speed is approximately 173Teraflops.
Completely nonprofit and totally for humanities benefit. Join the team, it's kind of fun. :-D

Seems other people/sites can claim they have great community spirit.

"priyajeet" started a team to do protein folding for humanities benefit to have this community recognized. We're team 40051 at http://folding.stanford.eduand we could use a little of your help.

More about protein folding team 40051
1. Update 2004/12/11
==================

This week we added a bunch of new members to the team.
Welcome and thanks for contributions to date.
Carey........12.11.04
xponchox.....12.10.04
wuzy.........12.08.04
Brendan_Roy_Wood 12.07.04
BossHoss.....12.06.04
james........12.05.04

We continue to make decent progress through the ranks. Our weekly production is not large when we compare to the top 200 or 300. Still, we're moving up the ranks at a more than repectable pace. Last week we cracked the 800 barrier. This week we're down around 720 and in a couple of days we should crack 700.

Right above us are the "Super Poop Heads" we really want to get over them soon. Further ahead we have the "Industrial Tire Group" and what they're doing with all this computing horsepower I don't know.

Behind us, "Dalhousie" (University) is hot on our tails. Unless we get some more help, it looks like they're going to pass us around Xmas time. Nice for them, not so wonderful for us. Production rates seem to be sliping very slightly even though we have added a few more users.

Hoping to see ur contributions soon.

Flinx

2. Hey man, due to some problems with my computer I aint been folding for a while, but I will start again soon. Its nice to see new members joining. Thanks to everyone that is contributing.
3. im james!!!! yay me!

this is my boomstick!
4. I will be adding 2 more computers in a few days!
5. bah you guys have got the wrong idea. As soon as me and my buddies find ET with seti at home they'll come here, cure cancer, and then they'll travel into the future and buy us each 50thz amd cpus, not intel ones because even tho they will at that time run at 100thz they will melt any heatsink you put on them and run slightly slower than the amd chips. so run SETI cuz I need a new proc.

Join the TomsHardware IRC channel http://chat.oddnet.net/tom/
6. Just a bit of a bump...

I must admit to feeling very suprised I'm still in the top 3. I would have thought a lot of the more hardcore among us would be all over this sort of thing. I guess they must be either folding for different teams (turncoats!), or contributing to a different grid computing project.

I might install the client on the computers of some of the more stupid people at work, as they won't notice.

I'll join with the others in thanking the newcomers, and calling for those who haven't yet joined to show a little community spirit, and help the team out!

You're not using your CPU much when you're downloading porn torrents all night you know..

7. Yay i'm pentak lol obviously, how does this point system work? I've only completed 2 wu but i'm in 27th place? huh weird, anyways if we can make it to 704th place with only 34 people, imagine the possiblities we can accomplish if everyone joins!
8. Sorry, but I can't participate.

9. I thought I would be rackin up the WUs w/ the fah console on my 3.06ghz desktop, 1.8ghz dothan laptop, 2 dual PIII550s, and a dual 2.4ghz xeon but I guess that ain't enough, lol. That fah console doesn't seem to have very good or any multithreading support. My 3.06ghz machine folds faster than all the rest, I figured the dual 2.4ghz xeon would. Oh well... I'll just stop complainin and keep foldin :)

14. I'm poor! I only run my computer for the amount of time I plan to use it, multitask to get everything done at once, and shut it down. Saves electricity compared to running it while doing nothing important.

15. Log:

As previously mentioned, we've broken the 700 barrier. That is a pretty good pace and all the new joiners have made this happen lots faster. Dalhousie University continues to creep up on our backsides but we've put off their takeover for at least another month.

We've gone and ripped the "clownz.com" a new smile and team "Go-Linux" is now gone and drifted into the sunset. "Racing Room 1" never got off the starting line and "Team Rocket" has been left on the launching pad. And while "Singer High School" got the cold shoulder we gave "CoolHand" a cold slap.

Looking ahead, the competition is getting serious. Just above us is "Hovis Lab @ Perdue" and not far ahead we see we can eat "Rice University". There is also "Greece" near some "Bumms" and we're going to slide by these guys soon.

Welcome:

error_911 and Sparky853 have contributed some massive 1st work units that have given us a real boost this weekend. Keep them comming guys!

16. Nice seasonal Logo, BTW.

10K for me! w00t! or something.

My productivity will probably drop now as I'm off work for a couple weeks, so my PCs at work (a P4 2.8C @ ~3.25, and a Duron 1.6) will probably be out of the game for that time, and my home PC (2.2Ghz T-bred B AXP) will not be on as permanently as it would be were I here. Depends on my landlord buddy as to how much use he makes of it.

I'm off to see my folks in South Africa for Christmas in the sun  , in case anyone's remotely interested as to where I'm going.

17. Merry Christmas, have a good holiday.
18. Argh ! My score is being hit hard, had to RMA one of my 40GB Maxtor HDD that crapped on me this weekend, thing is, it was on a RAID-0 array =(

Now I am back in the race, RAID-1 this time, if I can get a bunch of 13xx in a row, i'll enjoy a 10 points/hour production. My Mobile Barton @ 2.6 can fold one of those in 30 hours for 316-320 points but Stanford's has been handing out a lot of 1280s lately, they require 15 hours of work for a mere 76 points, that's only 5 points/hours !

Have any of you guys figured a way to somehow force the download of particularly productive protein out of the bunch ?

19. Sid,

Looks like "HuH" is on your case. Going to pass you real soon (like today). Seriously though, looks like there could be some serious competition going to happen soon.

"Huh" has the highest average production and is climbing the ladder reptty fast. "Chipdeath" is moving on up too. He's got a lead but it is not insurmountable. "sjonnie" is so far ahead of the rest of the pack that he can sustain top dog position for a long time.

"Folken" just dropped a couple of workunits worth a bundl and his average is moving up as well as his position. "James" is working on becomming a contender.

I wonder if I should get into the race. Hehe, maybe at Xmas I'll see what I can crank out.

Thank you for contributing what u can. I think that's the right attitude.

Hmm, competition can be fun if we don't take the results too seriously though.

Right on, had no choice but to take another pair of 6E040L0 (40GB 7200RPM) to replace my dead ones, the store manager confessed that he had to deal with a lot of RMA from that batch, worst thing is that the ones that I just RMAed were replacements from another pair that crapped on me back in April

Lesson learned, I'll never buy Maxtor products ever again !

I'll prolly grab a pair of Raptors after the holidays, set the Maxtors in a RAID-1 array for *cough*unreliable*cough* storage and forget 'bout 'em...

I'm sure that my stuff will be safer on a WD RAID-0 array since every single Maxtors I had (two pairs) gave up the ghost within the same week/weekend.

24. Hey guy's, im not sure why this is making such a big difference but trust me when I say that it is. When I run my system at stock speed P4 3.0e it takes forever. When I up it to 3.3 it decreases the time for a WU to finish at a much faster rate. I know that it stands to reason that a 10% - 12% increase in CPU speed would also increase the folding speed, but it is increasing alot more than 10% - 12%. I dont know how much faster it is yet, but its more like 20%.
25. I noticed the exact same thing by comparing frame time for a p1310 at stock (14 x 133MHz = 15mins) and overclocked (13 x 200MHz = 9mins).

I'll try to run my CPU @ 20 x 130MHz or 19 x 136MHz to see if the FSB alone can account for the differences we see between overclocked/stock frequencies and frame time.

It could be that F@H just respond favorably to higher frequencies.

Log - Team Rank 667

Team "VelocitySTL" just couldn't keep up, they need to find some gas. Carnagie Mellon University is slowly being buried in the ranks. "Robert-Alaska" has been snowed in. UCSD isn't going to keep up with us. "Team Der Hahn" (The Rooster) doesn't have anything to crow about any more.

Just ahead of us are the "NoMoreLamers" who are limping along right now. The "Hungary" team who just don't seem hungry enough to keep up with us amd we're about to flood "Mississipi State U" under a pile of points.

-----------------------------------------------------

Yeah Team!!! I see some people have straightened out there computer problems and are startting to fold again.
I guess u can see that the team has been revitalized.

The loving are the daring!
27. Wooooo 5k! Go me.
28. Were about to pass MISSISSIPPI STATE! Im from Mississippi, but I hate MSU. Lets kick there butts like my school"The University of Southern Mississippi" did for years until MSU decided that fitting us into their season was not possible anymore. We were consistently making them look like crap. Its funny how we can play the #4 team in the nation and actually give them a run for their money but a school in the same state thinks they are above us. GO EAGLES! and THG of course!
29. There must be 2 different Mississippi State teams because the one with University instead of U os ranked number 45.
30. Now this is strange. There seems to be a small range that for some reason the program is responding to better. If I OC about 12% I get a huge increase in speed. Anything more severly slows it down.
31. Up to 653 now, and I just started another F@H on my main machine (see specs), which should help. I finished another WU while away on business, and have two more due for completion in the next 10 hours or so. WOO HOO!!

XP2800+, Abit NF7, 1GB Dual-Channel DDR333, ATI R9800PRO 128MB, TT PurePower 420W, LG DVD+-R/RW
32. You wont see me on the list of folders. Well you might see"me" on the list, but you wont see me, though when you do see me, it will be me, but, you just wont see me.

Well seeing as both my machines will be turned off for a week, I'm sure quite a few people will catch and pass me.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Years (And for those that don't celebrate those holidays, throw in the appropriate holidays etc...)

35. wOOt! Go Me!! Just cranked out another 3 work units!!!

36. Good Day Team et. al.,

Log: Rank: 648 24Hr Avg Points: 2.8K (200K for [H]ardOCP)

Our pace continues to be good to reach under 600 for XMas. Our gift to the world, Toms, and ourselves. Please accept these holiday season treasures.

While we are being nice to the world we're not being so nice to other teams. We just trompted on an old "geezer" and snubbed our noses on "CIC_Paris". "Team Yukon" is out in the cold and "W3ST3RN 3NG" looks like it belongs in a sandwich instead of studying electrons.

Up ahead, looks like "Gryffindor" is not going to be able to generate enough magic to stop us. The steel town "Team Sudbury" is going to get slagged in a couple of hours and whoever those "Constance Collins Raiders" are they're still going to be wiped out. Further ahead, we see the (in)famous team "Intel"; want to kick some of their butt???

38. Just finished another WU worth 240+ points...and have another on the way in a few hours, plus a third several hours after that.

Keep em coming.... We'll hit 600 by X-Mas

XP2800+, Abit NF7, 1GB Dual-Channel DDR333, ATI R9800PRO 128MB, TT PurePower 420W, LG DVD+-R/RW
39. Not sure exactly how the scoring works, but that WU was 400 Frames and took about 40 Minute per frame, and was running for at least a week and a half.

I have F@H currently running on 4 machines, and I may set up an old laptop as a fifth.

XP2800+, Abit NF7, 1GB Dual-Channel DDR333, ATI R9800PRO 128MB, TT PurePower 420W, LG DVD+-R/RW
40. Wow!

You were persistent and it pays off big time. I read on the stanford site that they have some sort of benchmark they use as a standard.

Points are awarded based on the standard and how problems benchmark in relation to the standard.

Hope u know what I mean.

The loving are the daring!
41. I think that there benchmarking has some major flaws. I think they use an old P2 as the standard. The part that seems strange to me is that some WU's produce better time/points ratios than others. The last 2 that I have gotten are 450 each, they take almost as long to complete as the 1500 WU's. They arent worth near as many points.
42. hm...it seems only 51% of my cpu is being used for this folding thing even when i'm not there, is there a way to up to this so it goes faster or do i just have to wait? BTW i think we're doing pretty damn good for less than 40 members, i mean the #1 team has several hundred if not thousands. So still pretty good.
43. If you have a hyperthreaded CPU you can run 2 consoles to max out the CPU. There are directions to do this. I think the directions are on the first/original folding post.
44. Just shot off another 2 WUs, and am creeping up the THGC team list, approaching Folken  !!

Update: Up to 626 overall, with Intel in our sights!!
