I'm looking for a cheap upgrade for my computer. The cheapest cpu I can find for SocketA is a Semperon at about 1500MHz (2400+), with 333MHz FSB. My motherboard is an Abit KT7 (VIA KT133) which has a 100MHz FSB (supports 200MHz at double rate). Does anybody know if the cpu will work on this motherboard?

It seams reasonable to me that the cpu will support lower fsb speeds aswell, but I haven't explicitly read anywhere that it does so...

The reason I don't want to switch motherboard is because I will also have to buy new ram (ddr).

at a 100mhz fsb that chip will run at about 1Ghz. It should work.

//edit: I'm wrong

No! Ned is wrong! That CPU needs a newer MB. The new XP's and Semperons all run differently than the old T-Bird CPU's that MB was designed for. Even a BIOS update won't help. Scrap the board or look for a T-Bird "B" chip 1.3 or 1.4ghz.

Abit IS7 - 3.0C @ 3.6ghz - Mushkin PC4000 (2 X 512) - Sapphire 9800Pro - TT 420 watt Pure Power
Samsung 120gb ATA-100 - Maxtor 40gb ATA - 100
Sony DRU-510A - Yellowtail Merlot

Hi,

Why not just look it up? Abit is very reputable and provide lots of upgrades to the bios to support processors not produced when u purchased the board.

Anyway from what I can see there is no sempron support from your board
