Hi everyone after reading a few reviews on the web I finally built up the courage to overclock my newly built machine. I managed a stable overclock of 2.430ghz (270*9). Which is amazing considering it was running at 1.8ghz originally!

My cpu is currently reaching temperatures at around 47 degrees C. Does anyone know if thats too hot? and if so what it should be running at under load?

P.s i'm using standard cooling, cpu voltage is set at 1.475v and i only have normal kingston ddr266 ram. I am thinking og getting ddr400 ram but will i need a special type to run at this speed?

Thanks

If you are only reaching 47° C under load you are doing good. Anything under 60° I generally see as acceptable.

If you plan on staying overclocked, or overclocking from time to time, you will probably actually want to get RAM faster than PC3200 (DDR400).

If you get DDR400 you can use a memory ratio of 3/4.

This would make your DDR400 run at 202MHz for a FSB of 270MHz. Or you can buy fast ram to rou your FSP and MEMORY at 1/1 ratio.

You can read the AnandTech article about memory they are very good! And you will learn that you don't necessarly need to buy mamory rated at DDR533 to run your modules at 270MHz.

Keep on pushing, son. You should be able to get close to 3Ghz if your SUPER HARDCORE!

47 degrees is low still... keep going...

Come on now, my s754 130 nano chip will do better than 2430.
Actually, you have a 35% oc going there. It is very cool, and very cool. Nice go.

I.ve seen people running at 1.65 on a newcasle. I was running at an slight undervolt for the first few months @ 2450. Changing voltage gave me 0 more so I haven't tried myself.

sorry folks I think I was abit hasty to publish my overclocking results. After running my pc under stress for a week it turns out that I had to reduce the overclock down to 2.250ghz (250 * 9) as it refused to boot up every now and again. However, i only seemed to have a problem booting up the computer on the odd occasion. when it worked it, it worked fine all day long, so it may be just a temporary problem. I'll give it another bash when i get a chance. I'm sure i can hit 2.5ghz.

As for the voltage. I've set it to 1.5v in bios but I dont think it actually does anything as under the ps probe tool that came with my asus a8v deluxe motherboard Ive not actually seen it go up to 1.5v. But I may be wrong.

Can someone tell me how much of a performance boost i am likely to get from upgrading my memory from pc2100 (266mhz) to pc3200 (400mhz) in dual channel mode. and also whether its worth setting up a sata raid 0 system as opposed to the normal single ide arrangment i have now. Currently my p.c is achieveing around 13,500 in 3dmark 2001 se with my 6600gt graphics card. how much is upgrading memory and harddeive setup likely to affect my 3dmark.
