All,
The need for, or at least the question about, testing Infra-Red (IR)
diodes and transistors in pinball machines has been reoccurring on RGP
for years.
(http://tinyurl.com/c3cte) through (http://tinyurl.com/9hjh8)
I have been using the wise solution that Martin suggested, for at least
five years before he posted his suggestion. So, I know my version
works. I made myself a set (IR sender and receiver) of battery powered
hand held testers for troubleshooting intermittent or bad IR diode and
transistor circuitry and components. (http://tinyurl.com/axyl6)
My testers are easy to use. They are especially great for
troubleshooting intermittent IR problems and for aligning "long-shot
optos" like the one used on "Dracula".
I would have to make cases and circuits, if there would be a need for
me to sell these convenient testers.
Any interest? Feel free to use this group or to email me privately.

You got a webcam or digitial camera? Assuming the diode is either not
modulated or switched at a low frequency (i've not check the WMS's
circuits).
I had to help a friend out doing vision at University. Most of the
cameras can't expose IR because of the optical frequency range of the
sensor mounted in the IC die. Point your camera at your diode and all
will be revealed! (FYI, it works with your T.V. remote to)

Hello,
If you look under " tips and trics" there are two methods to check IR
transmitters. Using a digital camera and a complete tester. That and so much
more at http://www.flipper-pinball-fan.be

All,
So, I got: a few "yes", one "use a camera if it works", and one "I
already made one".
