I am looking to buy a new laptop.

I will mainly use it for Visual Studio and the web.

I am looking at Sony VAIO EC EC1S1E or the Dell Inspiron 1750 T4300

Both have high res 17" screens, 4gb ram and appear quite similar at first glance.

The Sony costs double the Dell - is it really worth it or will I not really notice a huge difference?

The different processors makes a big difference between the machines... although for Visual Studio, it won't matter. If you want a relatively future-proof computer, the Sony is good... although i suspect you can find something better at that price, since sonys are generally more expensive than similarly equipped computers of other brands.... which brings me to another point: where are you buying the computers, and how much are they?

Yeah alienware are gaming laptops, and i dont think you're one of its targeted audiences... In all honesty, if you're not going to do any gaming, and don't foresee yourself doing anything graphically, or even too computationally intensive, just buy whatever cheapest laptop you want, since Visual Studio 2010 can be run with pretty much anything.
