i have a shitty computer right now

duron running at 1296 Mhz
with 256 ram

i have some old 64mb video cards laying arounf and have onboard graphics on the computer

what would be better for video encoding

another 256 or 512 mb of ram or a geforce fx 5500 overclocked 256 mb

Better: Overclock duron/new system/hardware encoding card.

Quite useless: Overclocked geforce fx 5500.

Encoding doesn't use the graphics card, but it does use system memory. So does integrated graphics. Us one of the agp cards you have, and get the extra ram.
