Folding@Home is a LARGE GRID COMPUTING effort. Presently over 1,000,000 computers and over 400,000 people have contributed. Present speed is approximately 173Teraflops.
Completely nonprofit and totally for humanities benefit. Join the team, it's kind of fun. :-D

Them->http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/team_overtake.ph...;/A>

Seems other people/sites can claim they have great community spirit.

"priyajeet" started a team to do protein folding for humanities benefit and to have this community recognized. We're team 40051 at http://folding.stanford.edu</A> and we could use a little of your help.

Project Rank: 577 (we were 583 Last Reported). Folding is falling off two big contributors are off for family or better weather and others either have big molecules in the works or are making the best of the holidays.

Members: Unchanged @ 43

Contest: We have a few Gmail accounts to give away to new joiners if you contribute to the folding effort. Apparently these are being auctioned on EBAY now, .. what some people will do for a $1. Anyway, email me after you reach 100 Points

Off To The Races:

It's "error_911" and "skaarj" trading places back and forth.
Error had pulled ahead with a big fole but skaarj has now passed him. Talk about exciting!

In the group of "Folken" and "Silmatherien"... keep trading place. Folks what A RACE! We have to wait longer for the results of this race to become clear. Oh wait.. complications. Sparky853 is in the middle of that pack with overtake velocity on his side. Lets see where this one goes.

New thread... sweet. I think the least Tom's could do is make one of these a sticky... seeing how we are supporting both them and the folding project.

Wow, last time I looked at the scores I was beating you by at least 500points and now it looks like you are beating me by the same ammount! How did you manage that? Looks like I am going to have to do some serious folding this week.
December 26, 2004 5:12:16 PM

Jammy,

Couple things happened. I added another processor. I overclocked two processors. I got lucky with the molecules assigned.

Endyen (aka "me") was shaking his fist at me cause I passed you at least for the momement. He seems to like you. This is not a gay thing is it? I'm turning on almost all my machines for the holidays to get a little leg up on you fellows.

It's Folding time
There's no need to be afraid
At Folding time, we fold all night and we fold all day

And in our world of PCs we can spread a smile of joy
Share your cycles with the world at Folding time

But say a prayer
Pray for the other ones
All of the time it's hard, but when you're having fun
There's so many cycles wasted
And it's such a crying shame

Where those many cycles wasted could be put to better use
To fold some complex protiens, to help a common good
Well tonight thank God this could be your chance!

And you cant unwaste those cycles this Christmas time
The cheapest gift you'll ever give is them
(Oooh) Where nothing ever folds
Where no one really knows
Do they know it's Folding time at all

(Here's to you) raise a glass for everyone
(Here's to them) cooling that burning PC
Do they know it's Folding time at all

Use those cycles, Use those cycles, Use those cycles
Let them know it's Folding time again

Use those cycles
Let them know it's Folding time again
Use those cycles
Let them know it's Folding time again
Use those cycles
Let them know it's Folding time again
Use those cycles
Let them know it's Folding time again

Here's a little warning for you, and everyone else.
Funny thing happened to me. My folding got real slow, half as fast as it should be. I thought WTF, and tried reloading, even delted and stated over. Then I checked in task manager. I was running 2 FahCore_65.exe, one for me, and one for system. I closed the one for system. Guess what? It came back. I ended it again. It came back. I pulled the nic cable, and it died.
Now that I'm back online, it's back. I dont know if I'm running folding for someone else or if this hacker is using folding for other evil purposes, but watch out.
December 28, 2004 12:47:08 AM

ME TOO! So you think that this is a hack? I found the same thing in my task manager 2 weeks ago. I cant delete one of the versions and the only way to see it running is when the task manager is open. It will not alow me to delete it. This thing has taken over my system. What are your latest thoughts on this? Have you gotten rid of it yet?

Not yet. I have a couple of firewalls to put up, but no time to do it. I keep taskmanager running, when I'm connected, end the process, when it comes up, and pull the plug on my nic, when I'm not on line.
December 28, 2004 2:29:19 AM

Sorry, but I have no idea of what you are talking about.
December 28, 2004 2:31:33 AM

So you have no other suggestions on how to get rid of this in the task manager?
December 28, 2004 4:26:38 AM

At the end of your next WU, uninstall the prog, and delete anything to do with "FahCore". It will work for a while.
Make sure folding isn't running @ the time, or you wont be able to delete it.
December 28, 2004 10:34:37 AM

Are they both instances of FahCore? Or is one FahCore and one WinFAH?
Are you using windowsXP or windows 2000? If you are using windows XP then type MSCONFIG into the run dialog box and see if multiple versions of FahCore or winFAH are being loaded at startup.
December 28, 2004 11:32:24 AM

Both of mine are Fahcore.

Transfering points between teams in not possible, out of 12 members, only 6 are active.

Judging by their low individual point output, I doubt that it would be worth the trouble anyway.

How to run F@H

If you are a determined folder, you need to run the console version. This will use minimum system overheads and give you maximum folding throughput. Plus, with a multiple CPU machine you can run as many instances as you have CPUs, up to 8.

Download it and make a folder for it on a non-system drive. Make multiple folders for each CPU. Make a shortcut to the console and edit the shortcut pathname to add the -local -config. Name this shortcut CONFIG. Make another shortcut and edit the pathname to include just the -local flag, name this shortcut LOCAL. Run the config shortcut, entering username and teamname, don't ask the system to start the service automatically, this can lead to you having multiple instances of F@H running, not good on a single CPU machine. If you have multiple CPUs go into advanced and set machine ID to 1 for CPU1, 2 for CPU2 etc.
Once the config script has ended it will start folding. Future instances of folding can be run without the config just by running your LOCAL shortcut, it will use the configuration file you just made. Place a copy of the LOCAL shortcut in your startup folder to run the console every time you log on.

The trouble with the console version is it leaves a console window on your desktop. This can be hidden with various aps, or, more convenietly, you can use a program like ServiceMill to run the console APP as a SERVICE. In this way the system will run the F@H console in the background without you having to ever think about it or see the console window again!

Happy folding!

I'm also back to some 40-60 point ones. Somewhere along the line I think I even had a 9 pointer somehow!

December 30, 2004 10:07:32 PM

Would the console version really have significantly less system overheads then the graphical vesion if you are just running the graphical version in the tool bar and not using the display mode????

Stupid bug.......you go squish now!
December 30, 2004 10:44:42 PM

1 percent difference over a year means 3.65 days (approx) difference. I see the winFAH using about 15 min while FahCore is almost 24hrs of CPU time. That means winFAH uses a little more than one percent.

If your running a few computers it adds up rather fast.

Depends how dedicated you are.

Great Work Sparky,

We're managing to buy a little time. Building a little defense against those who creep up from behind.

We really need a couple more people to fend off those guys gaining ground on us. IF SOME OF THE OLD "FOLDERS" came back we could probably do that.

New members would also help. We've made good strides there, adding about 25 or so over the last month. People will lose interest though and so we're going to need more helpers.

So if you're new and not contributing. Join up and become a member of TEAM 40051 http://folding.standford.edu</A>
