Been having nothing but trouble with my new Samsung TS552B burner put as Master with my old LG CD burner. The most recent issues are problematic data reads which cause "data corruption" issues when copying and installing software from CDs. I couldn't install anything without corruption occuring.

I started playing around with InstallShield software hoping it was perhaps just a corrupted driver for the installation software. Until I found out by disconnecting the DVD burner and putting the CD burner to Master fixed everything.
Now, due to lack of time and ideas, I haven't done anything new to try and solve this problem.

I have heard of DVD burner and CD burner incompatibility issues when on the same IDE channel.

Well my only worry is putting a drive on the same channel as the HDD. I had one rather horrible experience which gets me pissed everytime I think about it. I had my old 15GB drive ready to be put in Slave next to my new 80GB back then. Due to some issues getting the master and slave positions to be accepted, or what seems to be the actual reason for it, the 15GB would no longer be accessible. It can be seen by Windows, but checking it will yeild a "the drive is not formatted" error. It simply baffles me how a drive got corrupted because of cabling priority issues. Is that possible?

I'm just worried how will I fix this without having any of that nightmare again. And what kind of priority jumper settings would you recommend? CS or MA/SL?

Thanks for any suggestions yall. (yeah it's not the right forum, sue me. )

I had trouble getting my burner going with my new build as well... I got the Liteon Dual DVD. In the directions that came with it, it said that it wanted to be on it's own cable, jumpered as Master, not Cable Select..

I had the same thing going on as you have.. I tried it all kinds of different ways, but the only way I can run it, is on it's own cable & jumpered as Master... So that's the way it is now... I took all my other ROMs out & just use the Liteon for everything... It works fine that way... I thought it might be peticular to the Liteon, but looks like it might involve other brands as well...

I would never put a ROM on the same cable as a HDD, either, myself.. The other A64's I've built have had SATA HDD's. So that left the IDE slots open.. In some of those machines I have more than one ROM in the system, but the Dual DVD Burner, still had to be on it's own cable & jumpered to Master...

I figure if I ever do need another ROM, I'll get a SATA HDD instead of a PATA HDD, in order to add more ROMs in the IDE slot, that would become available when the PATA HDD came out....

I think yer weak CPU, poor quality memory and low end graphics are the cause and effect.

Damn it...
There has to be a safe way to connect the HDD with the CD Burner on the same slot!

Actually even worse, when I had tried running ONLY the DVD Burner, by disconnecting the CD-RW, it still yeilded corruption errors. But that just makes things so much more confusing. For one, if IT were the culprit, why would there be data corruption errors when copying from the CD-RW? It can't be the cable if the CD-RW works perfectly on it either.
This is just weird, it seems even on its own IDE channel, the DVD-RW refuses to cooperate.

Late on this one but..... Eden perhaps do you have Half Life2 installed and the Steam Network ?

If you do the copyright protection installed with HL2 is most likely the problem.

Look for a registry key called Protexis or Secure.. In any event many users of HL2 have found that the copyright protection installed with HL2 has caused upgrade problems later installing new hardware such as burners or software for making CD copies.

If you do not have HL2 installed you could have other security software installed into your registry from another program preventing your CDROM/DVD drives from working correctly.

Basically unless you can track down the security registry keys installed in your registry manually and remove them you might have to re-install your complete OS.

A fresh OS install in XP (NTFS) with all new Hardware connected will solve the hardware communication problems.

I have the same issue using drive F:\ Hard disc as a second drive. If I re-install XP onto the primary C:\ drive clean and fresh I lose admin rights over the F:\ drive even if I install XP using the same passwords and computer name.

To date as far as I know or understand there is no work around for segmented NTFS systems that lose admin control over hardware devices. You cannot regain them even logging in with admin rights and trying to reclaim the extra hard drive or ROM drives, NTFS prevents this..............

Easy solution my friend, loose the CDRW, you don't need it.

That's a very interesting thing you posed there. I do have it and Steam installed. The issue first became clear when installing Antispam, followed by FarCry. In FarCry's installation sequence, I'd get Error 1607, one regarding initialising the script runtime for InstallShield. Reinstalling it did not help. I went through deleting it and all IS references in the drive, as well as reinstalling it, where I had to even get the new Windows Installer 3.0 (which actually did help fix some installation initialisation issues, in order to allow later on for the temporary drive disabling to make installations start and finish right.).

In anycase, perhaps you have a point there man. It wasn't too long ago we reinstalled HL2 to test it on the new system. That could very much be it. We rarely use our drives actually, since most of the stuff we use is on the drive, and we haven't installed or burned much recently. (the bro also gets his games online)
So I may have let the issue slip under the radar since a while, for all I know. (perhaps since HL2 was installed)

I also had issues (when I first got the burner) burning Verbatim DVD-Rs. They all would end up coasters despite the program succesfully finishing burning. Only when I read them afterwards do I get the error that Windows cannot understand the format or there is file corruption. Worse yet is trying to have them read on my TV's DVD player. Nothing worked. I haven't tested if the Maxell DVD-Rs would work there though (I do know they could be read after burning, however).

In anycase, this has all been quite hassling. But you may be on to something here and I definitely will look more into it. Worst case I double-check for the drive being functional for burning DVDs, and I'll sell it to my cousin with the old system I had, and get myself a more stable burner, like the LG or even the NEC. Basically anything well rated and known. I've had great experience with LG so far.

Err it's not as easy as that. I do use both drives, and plan to keep the CDRW.

Alas there was nothing else added on that thread except for a reply that doesn't add too much. I don't think I had the same errors even.

Well, that's how I solved it on the MSI boards / Liteon burners, is about all I can say.. I also have Steam & several games on the HDD, like FarCry & HL2, I've loaded with the DVD ROM, without a problem... Like I said, I'm only running the Liteon 1633 in the system now, because of the same issues you seem to be having.... [shrug]

If you find out something else, I'm all ears.....

Well my new Dual Layer DVD burner, burns CDs faster than my old CDRW did, and since I don't copy on the fly anyway, I just removed my CDRW from the machine, cause I didn't really need the thing anymore. Just out of curiosity why do you need it?

It responds faster to reading CDs, instead of causing delayed bootups and initial disc insertion reading when I use the DVD burner.

And again, even when it was disabled, the DVD burner gave me the same installation issues. (data corruption errors)

Well, with a dash of irony, I tried replugging only the DVD-RW today. Wow, it actually bypassed the error message upon Far Cry's installation. Interesting. I will test more to see what's behind that new awkward change of mood on my system's part.
