Hi there - Please would those in the know share their expertise with me. I'm putting together a new computer, and I'm getting a bit confused about all the possible options and whether I'm putting components together that are mismatched, thus resulting in either a waste of money or a degradation in performance.

CPU:-
AMD Athlon 64 3500 32/64Bit CPU (Socket 939) Newcastle

Board:-
Gigabyte K8NSNXP-939 OR
Gigabyte GA-K8NS Ultra-939
(open to other suggestions - I'm the most vague on mboard know-how)

Memory:-
1Gb 2x 512Mb) DDR2, 533 MH PC4200 ,non-ECC, 240 DIMM, unbuffered (too fast for chip/board?)
1 Gb (2 x 512 Mb) Corsair Value Select Kit, DDR, PC3200, non ECC (not unbuffered?)

Other thoughts and questions:-
Is the cooling that will come with the chip sufficient? I don't expect I'll be overclocking at all.
I've no idea what sort of PSU would be required. I've heard the VGA card draws lots of power, the one I'm going for is the GeForce 6600 AGP.

Thank you for reading :)

As far as the mobo, I like Gigabyte, but have no experience with the 939's, so 'it sounds good to me' .

DDR2 RAM won't work on that board - so get the DDR. Corsair is good.

The cooler on the retail A64's is pretty good and should be fine if you don't overclock, and you have a case with sufficient airflow. (heck, it's a great hsf if you're not oc'ing.)

The 6600 doesn't suck as much power as the 6800, but they still like juice... Get a quality PSU - 400W or more I would think is plenty. Antec, Fortron Source, Sparkle (the ones with fsp in the model) are all good brands.

Mike.

AMD doesn't support DDR2, which is just as well because most DDR2 533 provides lower performance than DDR400. Intel's pushing for DDR2 now so that in the future, when they move to DDR2 667, the format will be familiar.
