DVI to VGA vs HDMI

I just built a new computer and it will be my first time using HD display ports. I bought the GTX 580 and it has a port for HDMI cable and a DVI cable. I have an adapter that connects a VGA cable to the DVI port.

I understand that DVI and HDMI basically have the same output. But will I get the same results using the VGA cable with a DVI adapter or should I use the HDMI cable?

Any information would be appreciated.

If you have HDMI input on the monitor, use that. If you are worried about buying a new cable, get one online for cheap, it will work as good as any $30 cable from BestBuy.

I'd suggest getting a DVI cable.

FYI VGA is an analogue signal. DVI and HDMI are digital. Most DVI connections (DVI-I) have separate pins and wires for digital and analogue. When you use a vga adapter, you force it to use an analogue signal (The digital signal is dropped.)
