i was updating the raid driver on the 2k server at the school i work at and things went horribly wrong. in order to update the drivers, the directions said to break the mirror, config as ata, install the drivers and reconfig as raid mirror. well, after i did that, for some reason the c and d drives got switched and i couldnt log in. so.... stupidly i tried editing the boot.ini file and now i cant get windows to boot. i get an error that says ntoskrnl (or something like that) is missing. is there a way to get to the d drive and re-edit that file? i changed the partition from (1) to (0) and id like to put it back.... not sure what im going to do about the drives being changed like that... its got our active directory on it.... help.... pleeeease.

Houston We Have a Problem!

Sometimes Win2K can be pretty unforgiving.
Just as a suggestion if all else fails you can install Win2K on a blank drive, boot the system with the newly installed hardrive with the damaged drive as slave and possibly recover the files of the other drive, Just a suggestion. Ryan

if fixing the boot.ini will sort you out, then grab a boot disk that has ntfs 4 dos on it, boot, then re edit boot.ini (assuming ntfs, if fat/32 then just a normal boot disk)
You MAY get away with reinstalling windows right over the top, or as mentioned, installing windows on another hdd and recovering data that way, but from what youve said, its just coz windows kindly rearanged drive letters for you thats caused the problem so you should be able to fix it.

CALV, does ntfs 4 dos have write capability? I always thought tools like that were read only... Plus, can it deal with file permissions?

not 100% sure, I only used it once, to copy some stuff to another drive, I'll check tho tonight for future ref.

Another option (bit excessive but would work) is to use partition magic to convert to fat32 (if running 2k SERVER then srevre magic is needed)

the free version is read only, the full version you have to pay for is read write.

Dean, why not put that drive into another win2k computer and edit the boot.ini back? Just steal somebody's workstation for an hour or so and drop that drive in as the slave.
And so long as it was a mirror that was broken and then put back together, I think the order should not matter.. they are identical.

well guys, what i ended up doing was reinstalling nt, hooking the old server back up, promoting the old, then promoting the new one and then reinstalling 2k and x copying the accounts back. we only lost half a day so it wasnt too bad. it was the quickest fix although i found this after...
