I'm getting an athlon xp 2500. I was wondering what the best hsf is for it so I can overclock it. I was looking at Zalmen because I really don't want that much noise. I'm looking to stay within the $50 range.

I put a Zalman Flower 6000 Al/Cu on my back-up with a 92mm TT fan on constant 2700RPM. Clocked at 2.1ghz and it works good.

No reason for concern until you get to the 60's.

Cooler is generally better for the lifespan of the chip, but you're talking 12 years vs 10 years or something, so it's pretty moot really.

Get a Mobile Barton (XP-M) if you can. They'll run with less voltage at a given speed than a non-mobile one, and Core Voltage is the biggest factor in the amount of heat produced, much more so than clockspeed alone.

oh, a good mobo for overclocking would be an Abit NF7-S, but most Nforce2 boards would give good results. Just don't buy Asus boards - They seem to have voltage regulation issues from what I've read, which becomes a big issue when overclocking of course. Bearing in mind that's not from personal experience (although the only Asus board I bought was crap too)

Epox are V good for oc'ing as well.

As a side note, have you considered an A64 System? Much better for gaming, and not that much more expensive really. a 90nm 3000+ would overclock quite well too.

Make sure the NF7-S is this one <A HREF="http://www.abit-usa.com/products/mb/products.php?categories=1&model=6 not this one [url]http://www.abit-...s=1&model=204</A> The S2 has little for OCing
