I would like suggestions on building a computer. I have some parts from my old computer that I will use. I have $375 to $400 to spend on a motherboard, 1 gb of ram, cpu, & case. I was looking at mobile chips. I have a sk7 heatsink which I can replace if needed. I am open to overclocking. I want to go as fast as I can and stay within my budget, or close to. Would an 754 pin Athlon 64 be faster than an overclocked xp mobile chip?

If you're going to overclock the 754 as well, then most likely yes. At a given mhz, the A64 (socket 754) performs better than an XP-M. I think it's about 2 clock steps better (If I remember right, 1.8ghz A64 approx. equals a 2.2ghz XP).

I agree with Mike. The A64 2800+ @ 1.8ghz is about on par with the xp3200+ @2.2ghz.
I went from an xp-m @2.4 to a s754 A64 @2.45. It is easily faster, cooler, and better.

Faster yes, but do not make a mistake and couple it with a sub-par GPU. That 5700LE vid card ain't gonna run Doom3 any better with an A64.
