So I boot up windows 7 one day and my disk drives virtual and physical are missing. I try to use windows update to fix it and it manages to find the driver update and start installing it but it fails to actually install it leaving me with what is shown in the image. Why won't windows finish installing the drivers?

Looks like the hardware configuration database is corrupt. Boot to safe mode remove them all, reboot normal mode, you may need to reinstall original drivers.

I booted to safe mode and uninstalled the effected drivers, I restarted in regular mode and windows tried to install it from windows update and failed again.

Try the registry fix, it's for Vista with the same issue, but should work for W7.

If that doesn't work...I would probably try and re-install the chipset drivers from the motherboard disc.
