I'm thinking of getting P4 CPU w/ socket 775. What's the pros and cons of boxed and bare CPU? Thanks in advance.

More about : boxed bare

Boxed gives three year warranty, which you will want, and a crappy hsf whici you will not want.

Unless you get something like that 7700"Cant remember the brand" Intels boxed heatsink and fan+Thermal material beat alot of the others that are similar. If running at stock speed and the case is ok for ventalation then the intel solution does ok. If you add a 80mm side fan along with a clear tube that mounts to the fan housing and then run it to within a couple of inches in front of the CPU then it does even better.

I thought that the intel standard prescott fans were good for low to medium overclocking?

And unboxed CPU's - how are they stored? Some stores are slack and throw parts all together in boxes.

I can see damage and static occuring in these situations.

The prescott fans have a very annoying high pitched whine to them. They may be fine for low OC, if the point is to increase the amount of time the chip is throttled. There are too many prescott systems running throttled, too much of the time already.

Zalman 7700-Cu, 7700-CuAl or 7700-Al. They do a great job of cooling and they are pretty damn quiet as well. ;)

I know of the 7700AlCu but even Zalman doesn't seem to know the 7700Al...

My 3.0e does just fine with the boxed fan even OC'd to 3.6
The 775 will stay in the limits with the correct case and running at stock. I have one of those also. They are hot, dont think that I am saying otherwise. Heat is an issue, but IMO it is overly run in the ground.

To save us both time, assume I know EVERYTHING
