Using a compaq presario F767NR Notebook PC at the moment http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01...
hoping to get something of equal or better performance. would really like something that is reliable, does not get extremely hot like the current notebook I'm using,
Less than $500 usually means IGP graphics, so medium settings might not be possible on most games. Intel's i series and AMD's 4250 are both decent IGP. Nvidia's reputation has taken a beating lately due to overheating and early death of many of it's chips, and laptops are cramped and can overheat easily. I personally wouldn't get Nvidia laptop graphics, although they do have many fans. My 2 Cents.
Bestbuy, Office Depot, Microcenter tend to have the best prices currently.
