Opinions on bootvis?

My XP Pro system is working like a champ. However, I have heard that bootvis
(http://www.microsoft.com/hwdev/platform/performance/fastboot/default.asp)
is useful to tweak the boot-up time. Any downside to using it?
Tia for any opinions.

IMHO, if you aren't having any problems, you really don't need to run the utility. There have been instances when the program has failed while attempting to move the boot files, and subsequently caused a trace.log file to be created during each boot. This can not only drastically slow down the system startup speed, but the log file can grow to be several gigabytes during each Windows session, and it can't easily be deleted.

If you are really looking for faster boot speed, take a look at the Windows Prefetch folder. This can contain many obsolete files, and the standard recommendation is to clean out the folder once a month.

Note 1: You'll need to have the Task Scheduler Service enabled for Windows to recreate the items in the Prefetch folder.

Note: 2: I have my prefetch parameter DWORD value in the Registry set to hexadecimal 5 or 0x00000005 (5) under "EnablePrefetcher", which works very well for performance. I've noticed that several WinXP tweaking utilities allow this extra setting for better prefetching, instead of just the standard 0, 1, 2, or 3.
