Is an SD card an SD card an SD card ....?

I need to get a higher capacity card for my T3, and I have a
question I know all you experts can assist me with ...

1. I have noticed that SD cards sold for cameras are *much* less
expensive than those advertised as SD cards for the Palm. Are these
cards the same? Is an SD card an SD card no matter what the intended
device?

Thanks for your help!

My story is frequently told here: Lexar SD cards cost less than San Disk
where I shop. Lexar SD cards do not work for long in my T|E without becoming
"read only". They are fine in my digital camera, however. San Disk never
gave me any trouble.

In theory, they are interchangeable.

And you're the only person I've ever heard say that. I have a number of
Lexar cards, all made by Panasonic, although they also sell some SanDisk
cards, and they have all worked flawlessly. Lexar doesn't make cards,
they only sell rebranded versions of one of the 3 manufacturers -
SanDisk, Toshiba, and Panasonic. Check the Lexar with CardInfo and it
won't show as a Lexar, but one of the three others, probably Panasonic,
which is widely reputed to be the fastest and most reliable card by far.
YMMV.

Same here, I've not heard that before; I've used Lexar SDs in digital cameras, Palm m125/130s, Tungsten Es, with no
problems. I have read a few bad things about Sandisk, though.

Using CardInfo on my TE, on one 512 Lexar I own, there is no brand name. At the bottom of the window: "SMI, Unknown,
Secure Digital Card, Device Id: SMI_xxx etc."
My Sandisk shows, "SD256, Sandisk, Secure Digital Card, Device Id: SD256_xxx etc."

Yes, Lexar is the one that went to hell in my T|E. I had to read, remove
data, reformat the card. Very difficult after it had become read only. I
returned the "faulty" card, and the next identical Lexar card pulled the
same trick: read only.

It gets along fine with my digital camera, and San Disk has performed just
fine in my PDA.

Sandy, as far as I know, an SD card is not made for a specific device. It will work in any device which requires an
SD card, and I have noticed no price differences.

Is it possible you are mixing up Compact Flash and SD cards, which are both made by Sandisk and others? Compact
Flash are mush less expensive. :-) But they won't fit an SD slot, they're too large.

To answer your question, "Is an SD card an SD card no matter what the intended device?" Yes.

No -I am not mixing them up, thanks. I use CF for my Canon camera.
My Medical Association sells a PalmOne brand 256 at a member discount
for $125, and Mc Bain Camera sells a SanDisk 256 for $70 and a Lexar
256 for $80.

I heard nothing bad about the lexar cards and have had a 64mb for over three
years. I started using it in my m505 and now my T3. I also have a Kingston
512mb card which I use everyday storing, erasing, I'm and out of my pda all
day. Its a year old with no problems.

Here I've seen Sandisk 256M for C$48 at Sam's Club, a bit cheaper on
special at Staples, and I've seen a 1G CF (supposedly Lexar)
advertised for C$89 (about USD 75.00) by a small shop.

I just got an 80x 512M CF. Very fast and nice.

Speed varies.

It seems your Med Association isn't offering a bargain; I don't think an SD made by, or branded with, Palm, is any
better. What do you think?
The other brands sound good. Will you let us know which you buy?

Palm doesn't manufacture any cards. They just rebrand cards from one or
more of the 3 manufacturers, just like everyone else. The Palm card will
be a SanDisk, a Toshiba, or a Panasonic, as will every other brand you
buy.

I agree. I think that paying the big price is just paying for the
PalmOne brand, and preying on those who don't know any better!

I can tell you right now I am tromping down the street to the camera
shop and picking up a 256 Sandisk Extreme 40X for $90

And yes, I'll let you know how it works out.
