It never fails. I fired up a KN8-Neo last night and the A64-3200 came up at 10 X 200 or 2ghz. instead of 11 X 200 or 2.2ghz. Ran the numbers - ADA3200AEP5AP and found that Mo sent me a Clawhammer by accident. Already clocked at 220 mz (2.2ghz) at stock voltage and 35C idle. Keep or squeak? (This combo runs really nice) I'm tempted to just call it good rather than swapping it out.

I would keep it, as AMD clocked the newcastle higher while cutting the cache in half. If your cpu run stable at 2.2, I would keep it, because you now have the clock and the cache...
newcastle has 512 k, you have 1 meg

-Always put the blame on you first, then on the hardware !!!

You're one lucky bastard you know that!?!

Do a quick run at 2.4. If it's good, keep it. My 3200 has been at 2.45 from day 1. It's a newcastle 754.
Does it have a heat spreader?

Reply to endyen

Yes it has the heatspreader. I couldn't find one at NewEgg so I ran the numbers at AMD.

What's the date on it? If it's a newer chip, you may be in luck. A lot of the older chips could not OC as well. I haven't seen too many clawhammers around lately though.

Second line is CAAKC0334TPMW. I think the date is in there someplace.

Yup, wusy is right. Man, that is an old chip. The early ones were not great OCers. They maxed out at about 2.25. Not much joy in that. I would try it, but most likely send it back.

Well I already have all the Overclockers.com beat. Of course their posts are so old that they were all using NF3-150 boards. I'm sitting 2.3ghz at 1.52v. This PC3500 Mosel tops out at 230mhz so I can't push it any higher. I don't think I want to mess with it for another 100mhz and a week or so of wait. If it didn't run so good I might gripe.

Yea Wusy, not super-impressive overclocks there either. 2.5ghz looks like the roof. But, for a 754 platform and the memory in it it's doing very well. I'll have to mull it over. The 939 overclocks are getting 2.75ghz nutz! Very tempting!

Well, if the ram is holding you back, set it to 333, and go from there. 2.3 might be a great OC for a clawhammer, but it aint going to touch a newcastle at 2.45. I love to brag about the fact that my cheepo samsung is doing 223 no problem. With your ram, and cooling you might even get to 230. You gona turn up your nose at a shot at 2.5?

Reply to endyen

I won't see 2.3 with this puppy! Had to clock back to 2.25 to finish Aquamark3. Only beat my XP-3000+ by 2,000 with the same 9600XT card. Not real impressive.

1.5v. Turned it up to 1.6v without much change in temps.

LOL! I don't think that rule of thumb applies! I think 1.75 is as much as I ever wanted to stuff an XP. Hence the pop to 1.6v on the clawhammer. I'll play some more with it later. I'm not sure 1.7v is going to help it.

Well I have to decide tomorrow as Mo will trade me a 2.2ghz Newcastle if I want it. Decisions, decisions!

For more clock with the PC-3500 ram. The only problem is that I've heard the 1mb cache is better for 64bit apps. I'm not looking forward to swapping it as it has the big 7000Cu Zalman that is kind of a pain to mount.
