Tech: need help with DE Star Trek 25th Anniversary

I recently bought a DE ST25, and currently have a problem. When in
multiball it will not stop. I can step away from the machine, and it
just keeps firing out balls. I held all 3 balls on the flippers, and
the kicker still keeps firing. The only way to stop it seems to be
either a real tilt or a slam tilt. The diagnostic self test shows
everything is OK, both before and after it does it. I did the single
switch test, and didn't find any problems either.

The problem just started after I did a partial shop job. I'm still new
to this, so I just removed what I needed to to get to the majority of
the playfield with Novus #2 and wax, replaced the rubbers, the 3 center
targets and a sticky "laser kick" switch.

Before I shopped it I had replaced the CPU ROM with V2.0, replaced the
sticky ball launch switch, fixed the rope lights and bought the PCB
that controls the rope lights. This cured the only problems that it
had when I got it. I did think it was odd that changing the ROM
eliminated the issue it had with placing 2 balls in the trough at once
at the start of multiball.

I'd appreciate any suggestions for what type of troubleshooting steps I
should take to find the cause of the problem. At this point all I can
think of is to revert the ROM to the older version to see if it's a
software issue, although why it only showed up now doesn't make much
sense.

Thanks!
Tom

Ball trough problem. One or more switches isn't working so the game keeps
firing out balls to find them all. Check that each switch is working, crisp
and clean. might be a simple adjustment, could be a broken wire - there or
at another switch in the game. Your manual's switch matrix will help you
locate rows and columns and what color wires. Be sure you have the correct
number of balls in the game and all are accounted for. LTG :)

Of course I feel real dumb now. The center ball trough switch was hung
up. The assembly that holds the trough switches was too far forward,
so it was comming in contact with the trough eject arm. I just slid it
back a bit to about the middle of the available adjustment, and no more
problems.

Thanks for the wake up call Lloyd!

One other good thing came out of my search - I didn't know the
transporter crew were supposed to be visible at the start of the game.
My machine was reversed when I got it. So now my multiball works, and
the crew transports away during multiball. I should have guessed at
that one though, having the crew showing in the backglass in attract
mode is a much better marketing strategy than an empty transporter!
