I just built a computer for my friend. AMD 64 2800 2x256 2700, 400 Watt psu, Radeon 9600 pro the motherboard is an AOpen AK86-L. Whenever i bootup into windows(XP Pro), 10-20 seconds later, the moniter goes blank. The problem started occuring after i installed directx 9.0c, and the latest Catalyst drivers(i also tried the Omega drivers). I am in safemode right now and its working fine. The moniter led just blinks as though it was never plugged in. I have a really bad feeling that something may be wrong with the videocard, and i don't want him to spend infinity more money on the computer. Any suggestions will be extremely appreciated.

Did you re-install XP? Is it a fresh copy of XP?

You may have a conflict with another piece of hardware. If you have PCI cards installed try moving them to a different slot.

Old enough to know better, too dumb to care.

You may have a problem with the DEP feature in A64 and in newer Intel CPU.

Why don't you try some decent memory. PC2700 is a tad on the old side for this rig. It likes PC3200.

Can you uninstall SP2? The last time I heard of this problem, it went away when apre-SP2 restore point was used.

I've had the same problem with a version of the Catalyst drivers, it was solved the moment I reinstalled the older drivers. Using new ones now without trouble. Was just one version which wouldn't work.

Could it be the videocard is running at a too high refresh rate for your monitor to handle ? Try forcing it manually at 60 Hz or something ridiculously low.

Certified non beta ATI drivers from their website. The moment I installed them and restarted the monitor would turn black couple of seconds after desktop load.

Damn I'm drunk. But take another look. I won't mind till I wake up.

2x2700 I'd bet your having stability problems because of it. I'd think cybercraig has a very good chance of being right.

Did you run Memtest86? That might help verify if that memory is stable.
