The Inquirer did a story on this and links to a blog, but here's the guided way to finding it:

1. Go to maps.google.com
2. Click on the upper right link that says "Satellite"
3. In the search bar, type in "Rachel, NV"
4. Move the mouse to the right so that the map scrolls West. Soon you'll see a big white spot (a dried lake, Lake Groom) with a runway. Zoom in to the buidings. You have found one of America's biggest secrets!

They didn't block it - They just don't have that good a resolution to zoom they far in.

area 51 is just a military base, maybe at one time some crazy sh!t happend there but not anymore.
