I'm looking to upgrade 2 laptops that are using the 855GME and 855PM chipsets.

Looking at the spec finder info from Intel, I'm seeing 478m and 479m package types.

After looking thru the info for each, I cannot determine if the 478m CPUs will work fine in the above chipsets.

Can anyone clarify the difference and compatibility?

ex.
SL6FA 1.60 GHz 400 MHz 0.13 micron B1 1 MB 478 pin PPGA FC-PGA2

SL6F7 1.60 GHz 400 MHz 0.13 micron B1 1 MB 479 pin H-PBGA FC-BGA2

On a side note, this intel link gives me hope that either package type will work.

The celeron is a 478 pin P4 mobile chip. Any P4 mobile chip will fit. On the other board, there is a 479 pin chip. Only PM chips come with 479 pins. You may be able to get up to a 2ghz chip to work, but is it worth it?

1MB cache? Doesnt sound like a celeron to me, but if intel had released a socket478 version the the PM we would def have heard bout it.

Sorry, I should have read a little better. One is FC PGA, the other is FC BGA. The centrino uses ball grid, like the s775, while the P4M uses s478 standard.

Those 2 sSpec numbers are for Pentium-M's listed on Intels site.

BGA means ball grid array, and that means it's SOLDERED ON.

When you say P4m we are talking about a mobile prescott and not the dothan right?

Profile: Forum Master
More Information

Dothan, and it's predecessor are referred to as PM, while the northwood, and prescott chips are called P4M if they are equiped for use in a laptop.
Some laptops do use desktop chips, calling them P4Ms isn't quite right.

Why anyone would want to but a prescott in a laptop is beyond me.
