Hi. It seem to me that the p4 is getting heaps of new tech put into it but at the same time how long can Intel keep rehashing the p4? Will Intel get all the different tech working in different p4 models (such as speed step and 64bit in different p4 models) then put all those in the p5 or has Intel decided that they p4 will live forever? Just curious.

I really have no idea what the answer is (Aren't I so helpful?) I do know that Pentium means 5 (5=pent). The 486 was the fourth generation of x86 architecture, and instead of going to 586, they went to Pentium. It would be weird to have the 5th 5th generation, don't you think?

No, the P4 doesn't live forever, it gets replaced with a model number.

Eventually I think Intel plans to no longer use the P4 name and just call them by model number. Using current processors, you'd have for example a Pentium 560 rather than a P4 560, etc. A Pentium-M 770 would be a Pentium 770. A Celeron 330 would be a Pentium 330. Etc.

After it came to light that AMD's XP ratings are more often than not reasonable, and that Intel could no longer keep ramping up clock speed, Intel had to combat the problem by comming up with a naming system meant to be completely irrelavent to anything AMD used.

Pentium, 2, 3, 4 are only marketing names for new versions and technologies.

For example, the different between Pentium 2 and Pentium 3 was the addition of SSE and the serial number for the CPU.

Intel could have call the addition of HyperThreading and SSE3 a Pentium 5 if they wanted but for some reason they didn't make that move.
