Other than price and pin count, whats the difference between the AMD 3000 754 and the AMD 3000 939? Whats the difference between the Newcastle and Winchester cores? I want to buy a 3000 64 but am not sure which or why I should go to the 939 CPU. Thanks.

s754 CPUs are clocked 200Mhz faster than their s939 counterparts (s754 3000+ is 2Ghz and the s939 is 1.8Ghz). The s939 CPUs support dual-channel memory and the s754 CPUs do not. Newcastle (commonly associated with s754, but there are some in s939) and Winchester (s939 only) are CPU cores.

What do you plan on using the system for? Are you going to OC?

Get Socket 754 3000+ (2.0 GHz)Reasons:-

1. Better performance
2. Cheaper CPU
3. Cheaper mobo

And if you can afford socket 939 3000+, then you can proably afford Socket 754 3200+ (2.2 GHz), which is even better (almost as good as Socket 939 3500+

The reasons to get 939 now are
1- the winchester 90 nano cores may OC very well
2- The first dual core chips may work on that board
3- upgrading the pci-exp graphics may be easier in the future
4- you have 4 sticks of 256 meg DDR400 and want to use them all.
I have 2 s754 setups. They are great. I will be building a new system within a month or 2. It will likely be s939.
You cant really loose with either setup at this point.

Look at your first 3 points for S939. It's all "may", while S754 points are facts, not "may"

If you don't overclock, you lose with S939. If you overclock, you compensate the performance difference and justify the extra price with the fun you got from overclocking.

That just "may" be why I have 2 s754 chips, but dont have a s939 yet. I want to hear from someone in this forum, that they got a winchester to 2.6 without crippling the HTT.

In addition to these opinions, this review of the two sockets has some very objective dialog. It also has perfomance graphs which may help you decide depending on your budget and what you really want to use it for.

Wish there was more talk about specific mobo manufaturers but you can't have it all

Thanks for the link!
