OK, it was 'only' $70. It has served me quite well for over a year.
Time for a new tip, so I go down to RS, and they do not sell a
replacement. WTF?

Of course, know nothing clerk doesn't know how to advise me, and I know
nothing, so I tried to replace it with their 40 watt tip. It 'fits'
sort of, but doesn't appear to be transferring the heat well. Am I
better off with a skinnier tip that fits down in the wand further?

And PLEASE spare me the blah blah blah soldering station is only $1500
and I've never had any problems. If I had $1500, I'd be buying a pin
with it, and up until now, the RS version has been great.

Cheers!!

Only one thing about RS is consistent-The people who work there are
consistently idiots. It's like my friend said, I'm always underwhelmed
by them. If it wasn't for cell phones the frickin Tandy Corp would have
gone out of business years ago. Overpriced junk, no service, bad
selection, and it goes on. I don't have enough space here to rant about
how much I despise those schmucks. You've got questions? Don't bring
them to a Radio Schmuck.
PS-mail order yourself a nice Weller out of MCM for about $100 and
you'll never buy another in your life.

I bought the Tenma digital for about $50 and MCM electronics
sells all kinds of tips for about $3 each. I've had the Tenma
for about 5 years.

There you go-and I'm willing to bet Clay does a lot more soldering than
the average bloke. The nice thing about going non-RS is selection and
price range. MCM has stations for $30 and up, and tips at any voltage
your heart desires. And quality? Guaranteed better. Weller, Tenma,
Hakko are all good brands at reasonable prices. Time to upgrade...

You've never had any problems with it? What are you having now?

Radio Shack changes products all the time and their commitment to
support discontinued products seems non-existent. Their motto seems to
be "you've got questions, we've got more". Get a name brand station
like a Weller and be done with it. And, NO, they don't cost $1500. You
could spend that if you wanted to though.

I agree. I own 2 Tenma stations. One for the bench and one for the
toolbox and I've never had an issue yet. Haven't replaced a tip in a
couple of years and I do solder quite a bit. Tips are cheap if you
need them though.

OK, lesson learned. Last night, I tossed everything I've ever bought
from RS, except for some fuses and diodes, in the trash. It was a very
liberating feeling. Tenma, here I come....

Cheers!!

www.hmcelectronics.com has the cheapest prices on Weller soldering
irons, they even stock new tips, heaters and complete assemblys. :)

I go to their web site to see if they have it before I go
to the store. I like the look on their face when you go to the store
with the part number, and tell them they
should have it in stock.
Their reply is, "You mean you can do that on our web site"
As you proceed to show them where it is, because, they change help more
than I change bulbs in my machine.

"You've got questions, we've got blank stares!" I could deal with the
fact that they never have what I'm looking for, but it always takes them at
least 10 minutes/3 employees to figure it out.
