I'm considering updating my mobo and processor, and I'm going to get a 64 (for sure). I was looking for some lower end ones, because I'm on a budget, and I spotted an AMD Athlon 64 3000+, 1MB L2 Cache, 64-bit Processor for DTR Notebooks- OEM on newegg (go here to see; http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=19-103-444&catalog=23&manufactory=BROWSE)

it says its for DTR Notebooks, but after reading the review, it sounded like people were putting them in their desktops... one reviewer said he had to cut the plastic bases off his heatsink in order to get it to sit on the core of the processor...

is that necessary, and if so, how difficult would it be?
otherwise does anyone have suggestions on what processor I should get?
thanks,
John

Probably!

But wht Athlon 64 DTR are not that good compared to conventionnal A64, many people like the fact that they have 1Meg of cache (like FX and Opteron).

I don't recommend these DTR unless you really want 1Meg of cache and want to overclock it like a mad cow!

A better choice would be to buy a Socket939 Athlon 64 3000+ and overclock it! ou can find good S939 mobos and the S939 3000+ is a 90nm CPU that overclocks well, many people run it at 2.4+GHz on stock cooling.

And the price is identical! you loose 512K of cache, but gain dual-channel. In fact, the A64 architecture is less dependant on cache compared to P4, so It's not a big issue to "only" have 512K of cache with this family of processor.

The S939 3000+ can reach performance of the 3800+ quite easily! It's a good bargain! And if you get a S939 platform, you might be able to upgrade to 4000+ or beyond in the future. Socket754 will not see any new product! The 3700+ is the fastest S754 AMD will ever make.

Splendid
The DTRs come in oem only, so by the time you buy an hsf, they are more expensive.
If you are really strapped for cash, you could pick up one of the new semprons (like the 2800+ s754 ver), then get a 3400 latter.
