In my root menu i have 2 directories and they are . and .. what are these

in my directory i have 2 directories that are listed like this.
the date the time <dir> .
the date the time <dir> ..


What are these files and how do i get rid of them?

first you need to upgrade from DOS..

"." represents the actual directory name.

".." represents the next higher directory name.

They are just shortcuts. DO NOT REMOVE THEM.

Well what do they have in them. Unless they are taking up massive amounts of space, I see no reason to remove them. If you didn't create them, something else did, and that something else might need them.

It's probably a Linux computer ????

. is a link to current directory,
.. is a link to parent directory.

Deleting . will delete the current directory (the one you are in)
Deleting .. will delete the parent directory of the current directory...

The practice of using "." to represent the current directory, and ".." to represent the parent directory, originate in Unix, and were carried over to DOS and Linux.
