I'm thinking about starting a small business reproducing pin pcbs. What
do you guys and gals think are the ones most sought after or hard to
find?
Thanks for the helpful suggestions

I sell new Williams System 7 MPU,sound,system 7,9 and 11 display driver
boards and new display boards. The MPU board will work in 3,4,6 and 7
systems. These boards are not on the web page yet but can be ordered.

An all in one Early Bally SS sound board with the functionality of the
Bally Sound modules -32, -50, -51, -56, -58, and -61 boards. With
dialable reverb. Or maybe two to cover the lot. :)

I'd be the first in line to buy two or three of these.

The single weakest link in the Bally SS Inventory is the AS-2518-35
MPU. Between August of 1978 and April of 1986, Bally produced over
250,000 Pins using this MPU Board (Ref: IPD Search on 2518-35 MPU). A
vast majority of these boards have been destroyed by the battery
corrosion design flaw. Problem is, the Altecs and "All in ones
available today are priced @ ~$@200.00 w/ many more features than the
originals. I think there is a market for a $99 no frills -35
replacement board that corrects only one issue: Corrosion.... Use the
same chips and scematic as the original. Sell them with a required
"CORE DEPOSIT" of an existing -35 board that they are replacing. This
keeps the IC cost down and provides a hook for existing owners that do
not want to dispose of there corroded -35 boards.... Keep there proms,
you get the ICs for the cores...

May do a switch selectable -133/-35 board that converts the Zero
Crossing for -35 or -133 use... to increase the potential customer
base...

-17 boards are another story...

Corroded -35 boards go for $50-100 on eBAY regularly b/c people do not
want to spend $200 on a board for a $500-$1500 pin. The cost ration is
wrong...

my opinion,

Steve

The CPU board for System 3's would be a breeze as all the parts are still
made.
The AV board on the otherhand...

Get in line.

I've got the full range of Gottlieb System 80 boards (not sound, though)
designed and have prototyped some as well. Just accumulating funding to get
the bare boards made up.

If you can write good VHDL - I suggest Williams or Bally boards and
eliminate the 6800's and 6821's. Not much longer before these start getting
tough to find.

Of Gottlieb System 3 the DMD display driver is the biggest sought after
item. The WMS board has been remade but the Gottlieb board is being
hoarded by sellers. You will notice that almost each time a system 3
boardset is offered there is no display driver. They sometimes will
list the sale as "complete board set" but then tell you that the
display driver is not included. So if you want to make a buck make an
alternative that is not a duplicate. That will keep Gottlieb LLC off
your back. Or get ahold of Steve Young and make a deal with him and he
will sell them for you.

There are 4+ Bally MPU replacements already available. Xenon Sounds
Plus and Vocalizers and Centaur Say it Again boards are much harder to
come by. Combine the functionality of the Sounds Plus, Vocalizer and
Squawk N Talk boards; then add dialable reverb to sampled sounds (aka
the Say it Again board) and you'll have a hot item on your hand as it
is used on the most sought after early solid state Bally's.

If you can make a Bally/Stern MPU replacement for sub $100 I'm all for
that too but it isn't a pressing need like the above mentioned item.

Been done to death by lots of folks, IF you have the ability/experience at a
minimum, you have a huge pack to follow behind. Most of the major stuff has
been done, and the small stuff will probably have an even smaller audience.

If you can sell them for ~ $50 to $100, you might sell a few.

Other than that...... HAH!

I believe Pascal may have a solution coming for this, but how about the
second generation System 1 sound boards that have the unreplaceable
40-pin RIOT chip?

Indy 500 target boards. Cheap, easy to make and a reasonable demand if they
are priced right.
