Headset or surround sound speakers

If memory serves, a headset is better for gaming, correct?

If so, is there a really popular type of PC gaming headset, or one that excels above the rest, or one that has the best performance for the money?

If not, the same questions from before, but about surround sound speakers.

I prefer a headset. Purchase the best that you can afford that is comfortable for you to wear for hours
