Hey
I've a question of choice between those two chips from topic. Intel system (ddr2 and same chip) is about $100 more expensive then AMD and if added the i925 then it's like $200 (prices are according to polish shops)....so is the performance difference between those two chips really so great that it's worth the extra cash? Or would it be better to buy AMD and lots of extra ram?

Andrzej

A lot of people on these boards prefer AMD - they have the best price/performance ratio right now. What do you plan on using the system to do?

Definitely go with the A64 solution.

wait... 3ghz on the A64? its not runnign stock then, so its kinda of a unfair evaluation, but it doesnt really matter, A64 for games and graphics hands down

The A64 will outperform the Intel. It will also run considerably cooler. The only reason to buy Intel at this point, is if you use your system for pro level video and sound encoding. Even then, there are progs that will run faster on the Amd.

First of all, DDR2 means nothing, given prices and Intel's heat problems I'd definately choose an A64 with an nForce chipset board.

Just to clarify what others are saying, there is no 3Ghz A64 available from AMD at the moment. The only such chips are heavily overclocked examples. However, a 3Ghz A64 will destroy a 4Ghz P4 in everything, performance-wise, so don't let the lack of speed make you think otherwise.

An athlon64 3000+ runs slower (either 2Ghz or 1.8Ghz IIRC, depending on whether it's socket 754 or 939), but will outperform the 3Ghz P4 for your needs, and as others have said will run cooler (generally meaning less noise for cooling).

So yes, go with the AMD route.

However, a 3Ghz A64 will destroy a 4Ghz P4 in everything,

Chances of getting the average A64 to 3ghz? Slim at best! REAL SLIM! A 4ghz P4 will pound most A64's. The question was answered fine so you can get off of your A64 blow-up doll.

Sorry...I'm old time intel user...and I forgot, that 3k+ on the box means it's still 1,8ghz, and not 3ghz :D

Anyways...I went for A64 3k+, on Gigabyte Nforce 4(that basic version) and x800XL by Sapphire, and that baby just rocks :)
