Hi all,
I'm slowly working on my Boxster pinball project and I've spent the last
couple of evenings drawing a translite (man, that Photoshop is *amazing* !!)
, it's finished now and I'd like to get your opinions about it.

Don't spare me, if you think it's a piece of s*** , just let me know, to
blend, too much rubbish, nothing to see or just plain ugly, I want to know !
:)
Here's the URL : http://users.pandora.be/mushroomam [...] itcopy.jpg

And here's the complete project page :

Thanks for looking !

It is a good first pass, but there are a few problems with it.

The image just does not have enough contrast. Try dropshadowing a lot
of the smaller graphics and text with balck to make them pop more.
THe "BOXTER" is a funky color, I would suggest you decide upon a color
scheme for the translite and stick with it, as of now, the background
graphic is more of a tech red-blue/grey color, maybe go with that.

Also, how about Making the "BOXTER" text in the same style as it is
written on the actual car? That cursive-esque font? THe gauges on the
translite are pretty nice touch, contrast them up a bit and make the
colors brigher.

If I were you I would take the needle outof the gauges and then get my
hands on a 70's style amplifier. You could inline the Sound range
gauges from the amplifier with the game audio, and then have real
gauges popped thru the translite that would "rev up" as the sound goes
up and down. Could be acool toy. :)

In all, good first pass, massage it a bit and work on the colors etc.

NOt bad...
You could pretty the type up a little bit by applying some of the layer
styles available, like emboss and outer glow.

If you don't I think that muddy brown color will get lost. Especially
when it's backlit.

You might want to make the sky bluer to get more color, otherwise there
might be too much light shining through the translight, since the
colors are so light, it might interfere with game play.

More color, definetlly.

Okay nice start but imo a tad too much motion blur. Now imo it would
look much better if you only put motin blur on the surroundings of the
car and not the car itself. Also the gauges pop out a bit from graphics
blend them in a bit more.

You have heard my unprofessional unartistic knowitall opinion :)

Remember you asked for opinions ;-)

Needs a bit more work in my opinion:

- The flags at the bottom are clip art and look it -- very cheesy in my
opinion.
- The font for Boxster doesn't work with the nice Porsche font. Also,
the grey colour against a darker background doesn't work.
- The checkered flag between the Gulf and STP logo looks terrible.
Might work if you had a checkered flag that was hand drawn or a clip
art image.
- You are totally blurring the car!!! Isn't the car supposed to be the
theme of the game? That could be just about any car.

I think this could be done alot better. Same yourself some time and
grief, hire a graphic arts student from your local college. Simply put
a posting on their board...I just got a better idea: approach the
school and ask to speak with the teacher of the graphics program. Talk
about your project. You might be able to convince the teacher to do it
as a class project -- this is a real world example afterall -- and get
the entire class to do it, then select the best one. You would have to
talk w/ the teacher, but a pizza lunch thank you (on you :-) for the
class might be appropriate. PIzza for the class won't be alot of
dollars and I know you will end up with an amazing end product.

Good luck!

Nice, but...
You need more contrast. When you back-light, the car will disappear.
You need to somehow incorporate a window for the score.
The flags are cheesy.

Hmm, though crowd !! :))
I like that ! :)
The reason I asked for your opinions was that maybe I myself wasn't too
happy with the result, otoh I've never worked with PSP until last week and
cannot believe I did this myself : so beautiful !!
You can see that I'm torn in two on this translite too....

I'll try to adress a couple of "why's" :

The Boxster font is hated by everybody :) Now I got a reason to make it like
that : You all know that Checkpoint has a turning rim in the backbox, it's
located at the "o" from Checkpoint, my idea was to put a new rim in the "o"
from Boxster, that's why I didn't use the original Boxster logo because the
rim just wouldn't fit in.
I tried the Boxster lettering in other colors and none looked right. Black
is too black, and red just looked pimpy.
Anyway, I'll try to find a solution for the font.

The flags ! I hate the flags, but otoh they bring some color to the
translite. I can't lose the flags cause they are the flags in front of the
ramp on Checkpoint, every time you shoot the ramp another flag gets lit, so
as the situation is right now every time you shoot the ramp a flag will get
lit on the translite. I have no way to put the flags on right on the TMNT
playfield.

The chequered flag was horrible, but it got better using the smudge tool, at
real size it isn't that horrible.

I like the idea of a gauge on the odometers ! :)

The white sky : I too think it might be a problem of it reflecting on the
playfield glass, but otoh, to me it just looks so pretty, I tried with more
blue and it just doesn't look right .

"You can't recognise the car" : that was kinda intentional, the car will be
featured on the sides of the cabinet too and there will be plenty of
"recogniseable" Boxsters on the playfield (of which one 1:18 prototype) .

CC hiring an artist or ask some students to do it : well an artist will be
too much $$ and I like instant gratification, if I want it now, I want it
now, I don't like to wait a school year to get some art that may seem to
look horrible to me.

This all being said (and I really like all of your opinions) , my biggest
concern with the translite was that it's not bright enough, I really like
the Capcom art like on Breakshot and BBB and I don't want this game to be
the pale brother in between the rest. So do any of you have a great idea for
spicing up the translite ?
Thanks !!

Try one color embossed with another... yellow embossed with black, for
example, really 'pops' off the glass.

Why not have some fun with it? I know your intent was to match the
playfield, but why not make them engine parts on the backglass? i.e.
visit the USA, get an engine. Visit the UK, get a transmission. Visit
japan, get some ground effects. Visit france, get a...

....spoiler. :)

Yeah, it'd be a pretty weak link into the game, but it'd definitely look
better than the flags up there, and almost make more sense.

Any way you could make it a wavy checkered flag? Maybe with a stick
hanging off of it? Steal one off of NASCAR maybe? :)

It's all about moderation; think about a partly cloudy day. Some white,
some blue, none either pure white nor pure blue.

OK, but still seems strange to blur out the car on the backglass. In a
row of pins, you see the backglass, not the sides.

Well....
Euhm ........... *blush*
There was supposed to be an X-rated version of the backglass too :)
You see, the left side of the glass is rather "empty", it was my intention
to put a scantilly cled lady there, the problem is - as always - to find big
enough pictures.
Any takers ?? :)

Not into cars much, are you? :)

You get excatly what I said, a spoiler! It's funny because of the (non-
sexual) double entendre.

Well, here it is ...
http://users.pandora.be/mushroomam [...] t2copy.jpg

Much more color, more vibrant and with a Boxster logo that still needs a bit
of cleaning.
Once again, I need your opinions !
Personally, I think the first had more class, this one probably will live up
more on a pinball game.
