Is it normal for an Intel 650 CPU to reach 65ºC (149ºF) when gaming?. It was supposed to run cooler than 550.
The temperature in my room is 25ºC (summer is coming).

It makes me wonder about reinstalling the heatsink.

I wouldn't say it's supposed to run cooler than a 550. In fact under load the 650 consumes slightly more power than a 550.

65C under load is not enough.. should be around 70. raise the room temperature a bit to have it under normal value ..

that was fun!

You can try reinstalling the heatsink. Another post reminds users to press hard on each corner until you hear 3 or 4 clicks. Or you can do what I did this morning. Order an athlon 64. I'm retiring my p4 if I receive the order. A pricewatch vender had a misprint this weekend. Offering an athlon 64 3000 with heatsink and gigabyte board for $116.

Yeah. Great deal. But the ad was a typo error, and the order was cancelled this afternoon. Will order again later. Saw Revenge of the sith this morning, and it reminded me what computers are really good for. Flawless special effects.

The 650 is supposed to run cooler than the 550. If it doesnt then either he is just really unlucky and got one that runs hotter than normal or something isnt exactly right about the setup.

Running stock heatsink? That would be a tall order. Im not saying its impossible, but that would be out of the ordinary. Which one do you have? Did you know that if you have a MOBO that is capable of dropping the multiplier down to 14 that your 600 series can perform almost maybe even as good as the $1000.00 Extreme version?

65C isnt out of the ordinary especially when you are putting a very heavy work load on the system. You mentioned weather or the summer weather which tells me that you probably live in a warm climate. Im in south MS. so I know about the effect that summer temps can have on these platforms. What are you idle temps? What are your normal load temps when not gaming? Tell me more about your case the number of fans and where they are located.

Climate: Southern Europe (Spain - on the seaside)
MOBO: Asus P5AD2-E Premium
CPU: Intel 650
Case: Thermaltake Tsunami (Two 12 fans, front and back)
Heatsink: Stock
That´s all.

By the way, what do you mean by "Did you know that if you have a MOBO that is capable of dropping the multiplier down to 14 that your 600 series can perform almost maybe even as good as the $1000.00 Extreme version?"

Thanks a lot

The 3.73 and the 600 series are almost identical. The advantage that a 600 series chip would have is that not only is it around $350.00 to $400.00 dollars cheaper that the EE but it also allows you to choose from one of two multipliers. The EE doesnt give you that option, its a 14 unless you have an Engineering sample and they are very hard to get. The 3.73 is running at 266Mhz or FSB of 1066. Thats at the multiplier of 14. If you have a 660 for instance the stock multiplier is 18 but if you choose to enable the CPU LOCK FREE option in your BIOS then you can run the 660 at 14(multiplier). With the ASUS Booster software you can increase the FSB in windows up to 1066 and then you will be running at 3.73 and a FSB of 1066. We have the same board BTW. You should really consider either getting a high quality heatsink and fan or going to liquid cooling.
