Forum CPU & Components : CPUs Beginner's speed problem

Word : Username :

AMD 2200+ Athlon XP
ABIT NF7 S2 Motherboard
Windows XP
My problem:
I can't get my computer to run at regular speed, much less overclock it. It runs at about 1400 mhz. I tried to bump the FSB to 133, and it booted up, but once XP was running for about a second, it just killed everything and had a loud beep. I went back into the bios and changed it back. Does anyone know the settings i'm looking for?
I think it might be a multiplier problem or something. Would i have to change that when i put it all together.
Oh, and a ATI 7500 video card if that matters
And 2100+ ddr ram

Check the jumper settings on yer mobo, clear the CMOS and then get back into bios and verify that yer settings are correct.

many of these era boards had a jumper to run at 100/133 or 166 fsb. Make sure its set to 100/133 setting.

You want to set the CPU and RAM synchronous, aka 1:1 ratio. CPU is 133MHz bus clock (DDR266) and so is the RAM. Different BIOS versions have different names for "Synchonous" and "133" or "266" meaning DDR266 (at 133MHz!).

Your CPU is running at 100 FSB. (100x13.5 = 1350Mhz). When changing your FSB to 133 FSB (133*13.5 = 1800 Mhz). The 2200+ runs at 1.8 Ghz. There should be a jumper on that motherboard to select the CPU FSB. Make sure its set to support 133 Mhz. I think one option is for 100 FSB, and setting the jumper on different pins yields the 133/166 FSB. Also, make sure your memory is running at 1:1 ratio. Therefore your memory will run at 133 Mhz, same speed as your FSB.

My first thought was that those boards are notorious for undervolting the chip. You may want to go into bios and raise the voltage to 1.70 volts.
Thing is though, you seem to be getting an overheat alarm, so you may want to check that your heatsink is installed right way around. If it is backwards, you would have that exact problem.

In my mobo book, it states that after physically installing the processor, i should set the correct bus frequency and multiplier . It doesn't say where or how to do it. There doesn't seem to be any jumpers, and the only way to change the bus speed is to change it in the bios, at least as far as i can tell.

I think i can only set it in the bios, so no point in clearing cmos then.

would this be the same as "by SPD"?
It's either that, or auto. I currently run it at auto.

heat hasn't reached 120 F yet.
I'm assuming it's installed correctly.
My mobo came with a diagnostic program where i can watch voltages and temps and even fan speeds.

By SPD should work after the CPU bus has been reset.

Finished!!!
I jumped the voltage up to 1.65 and the FSB to 133 and it worked with the By SPD setting. Now... off to the overclocking section...

DOH!!!!!
I had changed the LDT (?) voltage, and not the cpu core voltage.
It WAS working... until i started up warcraftIII, and then it did what it was doing before, died with that terrible overheating beep. CPU was 112 degree's at point of crash. Oh, by the way, the overheat shut down is OFF! Also, i tried again with the cpu voltage slightly higher (the bios doesn't give voltage, just % above normal) and that didn't work either. So, i'm back into limp mode!
HELP!!!

Also of possible interest is the fact that my program for windows doesn't read my second fan, and my bios detects and runs it at half speed, so i'm NOT overheating.

Tell us about your psu. I had a system behave similarly, just before the power supply failed.

Do you have 2 sticks of RAM? That board supports Dual Channel, but if your RAM isn't up to it you might get problems like this.

BTW, that board is a bad choice for overclocking.

PSU?
I'm sorry, i'm more of a car guy, so the first thing that came to mind was the power steering unit.
Do you mean the Power supply? Brand new 350 watt.
Sorry if i'm confused.
Power supply still has not failed and i'm simply running at a slower speed than i'm supposed to. I guess i'm not getting the voltages correct or something.
Current settings: (Things able to be changed shown)
System Performance: Optimal
FSB: 100
Mem. Frequency: By SPD -Recomends "Auto" for best perf.
Row active delay: 5
Ras to Cas: 2
Row Precharge: 2
CAS Latency: 2.0
CPU Core voltage: CPU Core default -(Adjusted by % increase)
DDR SDRAM Voltage: 2.6v
LDT Volt: 1.6 -(@ 1.7 it sustained the 133FSB until Warcraft was loaded)
AGP: 1.5

Thats what i can tell you guys. HELP!

One stick of ram for right now. I may be purchasing a second of DDR 3200 later.
I don't need to overclock. I need to get my 2200+ running faster than 1400 mhz. It was running at 1800 in my Emachines, why can't i now?

And increase the DDR voltage to 2.7

Reply to endyen

I will change the settings, but aren't those just for the memory?
What is the LDT voltage and why did it work for awhile at the correct speed when i bumped it up? I thought i had the wrong thing since it has the cpu core voltage. How do i know the correct voltage that it's supposed to be getting(the bios tells me what it IS getting, but what is it supposed to be?)
Thanks again!

Do you mean the LDT voltage, which i raised to 1.65? Or do you mean the CPU chip, which is raised in percents higher than cpu core voltage, not in actual numerical volts?

Ok, i think i have it almost totally figured out. Everything is running at 1800mhz and the correct bus etc. Now, the only time I crash is when i go into games, and possibly not right away. I'm thinking either a RAM setting, or a video setting. ATI AGP Radeon 7500 64MB ram.
Bios set for 1.5volt.
8x Disabled (4x card)
Should i up the voltage?

Get the latest drivers from http://https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&folderID=27 and see if that helps.

would any of the service packs help out you think as well? I'm running a fresh install of xp pro.
PS. Everything seems to be running fine, except for Warhammer 40000, Dawn of War. Even WarcraftIII seems to be going flawlessly.
