I was using a pirated Product ID, but now I bought XP Pro. How do I change the Product ID without re-installing Windows?

copied from a previous thread (btw why use up that new "good" key why not just generate a new one with the keygen ???? )) anyway ...

1. Run a system restore to create a new checkpoint in case you need it.

2. Run regedit and go to: HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current Version\WPAEvents, on the right double click on "oobetimer" and change(or delete) at least one digit of this value to deactivate windows.

3. Choose run from start menu and type in this command:
%systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a to get the activation screen and go to the second option which is activate by phone.

4. In the new screen choose the option to change product key, and type in the new product key

5. If it brings you back to the prior screen after entering the new key click remind me later and then reboot.

6. Close that window, reboot your system and enter the command in step 3 for the second time to verify your activation , you should see "windows is already activated".

Thank you. Will this work on the Professional version? I don't recall having it ask me any questions about activation.

It should work on the Pro version, but I'm assuming that since you don't recall any questions about activation, you downloaded your copy, or got it from someone who downloaded it. I used this copy myself at one time.

Since you paid for it, I would suggest reinstalling the packaged version of XP. The hacked downloadable version floating around the internet seems to be missing a lot, and very unstable. You would be much better off to install off your CD.

Keep in mind this is based on an assumption that you have a downloaded copy, in which case reinstall. It's not something you have to do, the method to change the serial does work, but you'll definitely benefit more from installing off your disk.

I can't reveal the source of my copy, but I was told it was a volumized version. The place I got it from has a site license. Not saying that I didn't do the activation, but I just don't remember it. I have been told that places with site licenses get copies that don't [-peep-] with activation.

I've never actually used one of the volume liscencing versions but it would make sense for the activation not to be there.

In this case I would say go with it and just change the serial number. If you started with a legit copy you should have nothing to worry about. There's even a little microsoft how to for it, but it pretty much says the exact same thing as was previously posted here.

Here's the link anyway
