I was just wondering if anyone else saw this.
On the downside, Yonah will be one of the very few Intel processors that do not support 64-bit applications.
From THG today. What's the deal with that?

From this article on Apple's Intel processors, in case that post is confusing.

People who wants a dual-core alternative from Intel can always look up to Yonah and hope that 64-bit does not go mainstream sooner. Otherwise, they'll find themselves having a new yet obsolete machine. This happened once in the graphics market. Tech leader 3Dfx was set to release Voodoo 5 but newcomer nVidia beat them with a GeForce GPU card. 3Dfx never get to produce their card and the rest is history.

Yeah ! I wonder why we even got 32bit CPU's ?
I hate that in 64bit i can have 2-3 times the performance in heavy tasks like packing files, and 10 times the network performance..

Also encryption/decryption is tens of times faster, what the hell is that ??
We can always wait few more minutes..

Thats not shocking, it was known for a long time. What is more shocking is that Yonah will apparently be limited to 2.13 GHz, ie, the same speed as today's Dothan. So for most apps in general, and for all apps when on batteries, yonah will not be any faster than todays Dothan (well maybe its FP/SSE performance will be somewhat improved). Not that Dothan is slow, but still dissapointing for a new core launched more than a year later.

Oh, and irony about the lacking 64 bit support is that Yonah will also be used in servers..

At least there wasn't 1 month ago.

That 10 times network is from windows looking computers in network, didn't find a link for it yet.
But my comment was bit biased..

I didn't find that 64 bit zip test, but i think it was 7-zip what was used.

I hope those help.

[edit] There are better test some where but im too lazy to search.

but youre not getting that performance because youre running 32bit OS, right?
True, but it's a simple upgrade to get more performance where it matters.

No extra fee for changing 32bit xp to 64bit.

Time to upgrade =)

What are the minimum hardware requirements?
I won't upgrade if my rig is not able to run it smooth.
