They lost over $1 billion last quarter and have nearly $300 billion in long term debt. $300 billion!! How is a company like this able to stay afloat??? They don't even have enough assets to offset such liabilities, while losing money at the same time.

I guess when you make crappy vehicles and most of your profit off of big, gas-guzzling trucks, you won't be doing too well when things start looking the way they are.

Serves them right for selling Hummers to the public...

The reason they're probably still afloat is because no bank could handle thier going under. $300B though is insane. That has to be the largest dept outside the federal government. If GM goes down, so will a lot of other businesses most likely.

American automakers really need to get their asses in gear.

BS. I had a 1988 Cavalier I bought in 1998, drove it 4 years, the only thing that broke was an ignition coil. It was already 10 years and 145,000 miles old when I bought it. Ignition coil cost $40.

Also for 1988, the Buick LeSabre won JD Powers quality survey, which I believe was tallied in 1989.

Not to mention you get more car for your dollar, a midsized American sedan cost as little as a Japanese compact. A full-sized American sedan cost as much as a Japanese midsize.

More defects? Sure, blame American workers for that, then if you're an American worker you should have some perspective. Long term reliability? Similar to Japanese cars, better than some German cars (worse than others), and far beyond Korean cars.

The only Korean car I've ever seen stay together long term was the Ford Festiva (KIA). Amazing KIA doesn't seem to do as well with their OWN cars.

In 2003, I decided to try a KIA. I got the Sorento SUV. I dont have anything bad to say about it. I now have almost 50000 KM (30000 miles) without a single problem, except for light bulb, that were replaced under the waranty. But I do not blame KIA for that.. Roads in Quebec are the worst I've seen. Unbelievable.. I live in rural area and it is still amazing that there is not more road crash due to bad road.. Rots, cracks, big hole, uneven pavement,...

KIA has been bought by Hyunday. Hyunday has good value cars. Their quality is improving and starts to hurts american cars and start to put pressure over japanese manuf. In the next years, Korean would now be a serious player in the big's field. KIA's newer cars, such as the Sorento, Spectra and the new Sportage are built with Hyunday and winning awards. My Sorento's engine is an 3.5 liters V6 made by Hyunday.

I've seen, on a TV show, A KIA sorento put to test against a Jeep Liberty. An off road test.. Well, the KIA did better in all parts of the track. and particulialy, in a 2-3 feets deep water hole with rots that the Sorento manage to cross on its own while the Jeep got stuck in.. And water got into the Jeep.. enough to wet the shoes of the driver..

I had before a Sonoma 4x4..made by GMC. It was a nice truck, but my Sorento is still more solid than the Sonoma was at 50000Km.. But I manage to put 228000km on my Sonoma before selling it to my father who is still running it. Still have to see if my KIA will last that long. But so far, I'm not worried...

Agreed.

Hyundai, in case no one checked the link by DH a few months ago, had its Sonata ranked highest entry quality car in the MARKET. Freakin' hell, that's including legendary quality cars like the Accord, Civic and Camry! At 2 problems per 100 cars, it's simply a landslide win. I was amazed as heck, considering the reputation Hyundai had. (well, we have a Sonata too, but a 2002) It's definitely comforting to know lower priced value is now coming with high quality right out.
The new Tucson's very interesting too. Lots of standard features for a 20 000$ CDN SUV.

And you are right about the roads in Quebec. This year damaged our roads so bad, holy crap the holes they left!

Also, since when did KIA get purchased by Hyundai? I looked it up once and didn't find anything regarding that. I do know they share some of their models' base, but then again so does GM and its subsidiaries.

Another thing, isn't the Sonoma a Toyota car now?

The Tacoma is a Toyota truck.

The new Tucson is the base for the new Sportage. But I like the Sportage's look better.

No, it's GMC.... That's what I drive a Sonoma High Rider.... It's got the name painted in the stripes on the doors, but most of the time you can't read it... It's covered in Macho Mud!!!!

The reason that American cars suck is the unions. Those workers would have to shoot someone to get fired. I have a Ford Ranger and it's been alright. The fuel chip went bad with only about 10,000 miles but that was replaced for free. My next car or truck will be foreign though.

Sonoma is a Chevy S10, renamed after a race track (I think in California). I always hated the name, I thought it sounded to japanese, that GM was trying to pretend to mimick rather than going head to head with the competition.

I believe GM will follow the Airlines and file chapter 11. They can get rid of the Pensions, get the workers to pay for health care, cut wages, do away with the 95% layoff money and come out smelling like a Rose!!

I am willing to be that their other holdings are "legally" seperate from "Generous Motors" cars.

That aside, who are you kidding, the Federal Government won't let them fail. They will be bailed out like Chrysler was.

Now while pensions are dropped, wages cut, health care now employee paid, want to be the Corporate management will not only get there pay and bonuses, but more money for saving the company so much money

Sonoma is a city and a county in Northern CA. There's no race track out here named sonoma. Up there we have Sears Point. It might have had a different name at some point but the sonoma is a relatively recent name isn't it?
