Precision Workstation 610 - snaps and pops in Audio

Hello..

Have a dual 500MHz Xeon SCSI-based 610 Wkstn which originally shipped
with NT4 and now has Win2000 Wkstn. There is a problem with the on-
board sound and also SBLive PCI board. Snaps and Pops from audio on a
wide range of apps.. even Windows 2000 OS sounds `snap' and pop' as if
being truncated.

Mostly the problem is with MP3 playback in Winamp2 and games like MS
FlightSim 2002. How can one diagnose what is causing? Have run
Dxdiag.. have tried LOTS of drivers and swapped PCI slots.. nothing
will cure audio `snaps'. What hardware or fix will remedy?

Please advise.
