My brother was looking for a really cheap computer that would run internet explorer, notepad, Itunes, and such. Would it be best to find one from a store or build one. He wants this to be as cheap as possible.

850mhz... How fast are you?

What $ does cheap mean? You could buy a cheap setup from Dell for around $400. <A HREF="http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/compare.aspx/tower?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd" target="_new">PowerEdge 420 no Monitor or OS $278</A>. However, the 420 is picky about the OS. Things like the ethernet card are hard to get to work, since intel does not have Win XP/2000/98 drivers for it.

Or build it yourself:

mobo - 50 w/onboard sound and LAN
cpu - 50
cd drive - 20
floppy - 15
case + pwr sup - 50
monitor - 70
keyboard - 20
mouse - 10
patch cable - 15
graphics card - 25

e-Machines used to be bout the cheapest, but a $400 Dell with monitor would be hard to beat...

I would not be excited to spend my time building the cheapest PC... Then you would be expected to troubleshoot that PoS

buy a used computer...look anywhere ppl sell stuff in the news paper whatever

dunklegend, I actually found the exact same offer at a local store and it is $320 after $300 in mail-in-rebates.

What I like about Walmart is that they exchange any item very easily, and with a local store this might not be the case.
Plus you'll have to pay $620+tax and maybe in a month or 2 you'll get the money from the rebate.
