AMD Athlon 64 Questions

Hello everyone. I'm looking into buying an AMD Athlon 64 processor using socket 939. I already have the motherboard.

Now, I'm looking at a few specific models here, namely Ahlong 64 3000+, 3200+ and 3500+. All of these are Venice integrated. Now the 3000+ is approximately $150 while the 3500+ is approximately $250. The 3200+ falls somewhere in between... around $180 or so.

What I'm planning to use my computer for is gaming and all the other obligatory internet things. So, tell me, is the price jump of about $100 from 3000+ to 3500+ worth it to a guy like me?

I want to make sure I get a good processor that will still hold its own in a couple of years, so I'm thinking about getting one better than the 3000+.

Any ideas?

Well, the bottleneck for most games is not going to be the CPU... it will likely be the GPU. If you don't want to get the 3000+ then I would probably suggest the 3200+. Save the money and put it into the next GPU that you buy.

Oh I definately plan on getting a good graphics card. Probably looking at an ATI with PCI express slots and 256 MB of GDDR3... sexeh.

I think I might go with a 3200... just so I can say I didn't go with the smallest 939 CPU.

Get a ATI 6800GT vid card... that should make you happy. Or if you can afford it upgrade to the 7800GTX that thing will make anyone happy.

You can easily OC the 3000+ to 3200+ speeds without much effort. I'd say get the 3000+ and get a 3200+ package to leave by your rig. Once you put the heatsink nobody will notice the difference.

Duh! An ATI 6800GT... Strange mix of technology here... Is it the model with an X800PRO and a 6800GT on the same board that auto-detects which games you run and choose the better GPU for it???

Where can we buy it???

It's true that both ATI and nVidia offers good products, but right now, the nVidia 6600 and 6800 series offers SM3.0 supports while X700/X800/X850 don't support it. If you plan to keep your card for a VERY long time, I would recommend you to get an nVidia card. If you change your GPU every year, then get a Radeon.

If you want decent performance in today's game, get at least a 6600GT or an X700PRO based card.

That Ati 6800 video card paired with an AMD 840EE processor will make your rig fly.

Yeah! We could build our dream system :

CPU : AMD 840EE
MOBO : ASUS nForce4 SLI Audigy2 Edition
RAM : Rambus GDDR3 1000MHz with Infineon TCCD chip
GPU : 2 x Ati 6800 CrossFire Edition
HDD1 : 2 x 200Gig Seagate Raptor SATA2 with SCSI-NCQ (In RAID-5 of course!)
PSU : Antec PowerStream 520W

That would be an awesome rig!

You are damn right, I forgot about that incredible transluscent board with integrated water-pipe that cools the computer room with flashy black light that emits Feng-Shui light to relax the user.
