Can somebody please explain to me if this is a good idea to enable this in the BIOS? I have an Athlon 64 3700+ not overclocked, I did get the newest CPU drivers from AMD's website.

You'd figure this option would be enabled by default, why is'nt it? Is there a reason not to enable it?

the only reason it's not enabled is that it lowers the performance of the system

It doenst lower the performance. It adjust the performance of the CPU according to the power asked by the user. Light task, low MHz and voltage. Heavy computing, full power.

Totally wrong! C&Q don't affect performance at all in games or CPU-intensive task since the CPU change based on CPU load.

Cool & Quiet is very good if you let your PC run 24/7 for D/L and stuff like that. The CPU throttles down while you surf the web, read mail, D/L stuff and when you need more power (games, video encoding, etc...) C&Q automatically set the CPU speed to 100%.

The reason why it's not set to ON by default is probably to reduce the number of calls to the Tech. Support from people who complain that their 2.0GHz+ CPU is running at 1.0GHz... :smile:

In my opinion, within a few year's all CPU will have these power saving feature enabled by default.

Is there a newer driver that fixes issues with games? I've read quite a few sites that say they had problems going from idle/browsing/etc to playing a game. Either the game would lock up or crash, apparently these people were saying the cpu wasn't coming back up to full power quick enough. Anyone have this happen?

I did have a question though regarding heatsinks that support C&Q, is there any that support it other than the retail ones?

If your referring to the ajustable fan speed then any 3 pin connector fan / heatsink combo will work.

I see. I haven't personally used a retail A64, from what I've read (on AMD's site) they made it sound like the retail hsf has a thermal sensor that the fans reads from to adjust speed. Though I never saw why any 3 pin fan wouldn't work, if the driver is going to control the V/mhz of the cpu I was assuming it could for a fan as well, but just wanted to check. Thanks.

Yeah, the driver controls the fan speed based on the temperature that the in-die sensor reads, and then adjusts the CPU fan header speed accordingly.

Make sure you put the CPU fan connector into the CPU fan header and not a different one though, else it won't work.

CnQ is "great". When I or the ole lady are just "browsing" or kicking it, the voltage (and the heat, and the fans and everything associated with the CPU) throttles down from 1.5 v to 1.105 on my FX53. This saves energy, fans, reduces heat and lengthens the life of ALL the components involved.

When I load FarCry or Pacific Fighters, the volatge instantaneously goes to full and my gaming is great. I recommend you use it.

Need suggestion in picking a Processor

The i7 920 runs about $290 in US, so I'm guessing that you either are not in the US or need that $400 for more then just the cpu. So a PII 955 c3 is $160 on newegg.com, can get a good asus board for $110ish, and 4gb of ddr3 for $105ish. Total would be around $375. There are also boards in the $60 range that are good but dont have as many features. You can try an i5 setup, but it will push you past your $400 limit.
