Hi,
Just got a '34 Bally Fleet. It didn't come with any balls. Can anyone
tell me what size it should use and how many? After measuring the
holes it looks like maybe a 3/4". I'm guessing 10 balls (or 11 if you
include the stool pigeon tilt - is the tilt ball the same size?).

If its like my '33 Blue Ribbon it will have 10 balls, 5/8" diameter and
one tilt ball 1/2" diameter.

I'd say it's probably like your Blue Ribbon - same manufacturer and one
year difference at a time when one year didn't seem to make much of a
difference in the games.
How is the stool pigeon supposed to work? Is there a peg on a spring
or something? It seems part of mine is missing.

Thanks, Mike. The tilt ball sits on the two brass pads normally. There
is a slug that goes into the hole and when you coin up that slug lifts
the tilt ball and it rolls back onto the pads. The brass pads are there
because they were wired to the payout mechanism on payout games like
Rocket. If the ball fell off the pads it would break continuity and kill
the payout mech. On non payout games there are no wires but they left
the brass pads anyway. Basically you're on the honor system if you tilt
because it will not stop game play

The Magic Eraser is probably my favorite new cleaning tool. Novus 2 is
also a staple in my arsenal of cleaners. However, not on prewar pins.
They are abrasive and they leave a white residue which could get into
the bare wood grain. I use citrus cleaners like Orange Power, Orange
Glow, etcetera because they are mild non abrasive cleaners. They don't
dry out too fast so you have less chance of scrubbing dry thereby
causing abrasive friction. I then follow up with furniture polish
because it puts essential oils back into the wood. The results speak for
themselves as you have seen by the pics on my page

Bummer. Apparently there is a difference between Blue Ribbon and
Fleet. I picked up some 5/8" balls and they appear to be too small.
They would be usable, but just seem to be too small. Kind of like
using a roll tilt ball in place of a standard size one - it'd work, but
just be a little funny.
Any chance you could tell me the diameter of one of the trap holes on
your Blue Ribbon (I want to compare to Fleet)? Oh, and thanks for the
stool pigeon info.

I don't think there was a lot of standarization on ball size or type
back then. Some game had steel balls and others used marbles, and
different sizes of both can be found. At least one game (name escapes
me) changed ball size in the middle of the run!

I'm terribly sorry, Mike! I just went and measured instead of going by
(feeble) memory. The balls are 3/4" and the tilt ball is 1/2", the holes
are 1". Sorry to mess you up! <:-)

No problem, Cliffy - that sounds more like the size I'm looking for
based on the holes I measured on my game. I guess at least I have the
right size for the tilt. The other balls I can return to where I got
them. I'll just have to see if PBR has 3/4" balls.

You bet and sorry again If Steve doesnt have them try a bearing
house. I'm lucky that I have a friend (ahem) who's wife works for motion
industries, a big bearing house We used to have King Bearing out here
in Cal but they are now Applied Technologies. Maybe they are online?
Heck, even McMaster-Carr has ball bearings so try them too at mcmaster.com
