How do I use a EM64T processor?

Forum CPU & Components : CPUs How do I use a EM64T processor?

Word :    Username :

I just bought an Intel Pentium 4 640+ processor (3.2GHz 800MHz FSB 2MB Cache) with EM64T.

I have an Asus P5WD2 motherboard and the manual says that it "has a BIOS file that supports EM64T". I guess that means that the motherboad will allow this cpu to run at 64 bit?

I have 2 questions:
1. Can I still run the processor in 32-bit mode in case I don't want to buy a 64-bit OS?
2. How do I get the 64-bit part of the processor to work?

Thanks alot

Zach

1. Yes
2. Install at 64bit operating system and run 64bit apps.

Ah, the joys of (almost) 100% backward compatability.

EMT64 just adds the capabilities to run future (or win XP 64bit) 64 bit OS's and apps but doesnt change the current 32bit capabilities (its still a 32bit cpu that can handle 64bit, or 32bit CPU with foward compatibility compared with Itaniun - 64bit with 32bit backward compatibility) and the 64bit is something thats not enabled or disabled, its used when its used - if you have a 64bit os it will use it, if you dont, it wont use em or even know what it is.

Is there a trademark on x86-64 by AMD?

To my knowledge, no. AMD trademarked "AMD 64" and Intel trademarked "EM64T". (Which I still prefer to reorder to EMT64 in favor of the image of emergency medical technicians coming to Intel's rescue to patch the up the P4.)

But hey, why ask me when you can ask the US Patent and Trademark Office? They have an online search for a reason. :)

Let's seee, according to the USPTO, AMD started filing for a trademark on "X86-64" pertaining to computer hardware, etc. on April 21, 2000. But then they abandoned it March 30, 2001. So its status is dead now. ("AMD 64" by the way was trademarked by AMD on August 11, 2003 and it still live today. So it looks like AMD went for two years without any 64-bit trademarks.)
