  1. What is the error message? If this is a file missing error message, you will need a operating system disc to copy the missing file back onto the hard drive.
  2. Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change etc. Iv tried f8 done safe mode sm w network sm command promt last known config system repair tried reseting to factory config w f10. W th sys repair if I let it set for a while. A backround will pop up w a mose pointer bt no icons appear. Then th sys repair window opens runs for a while then command prompt open w th x:\windows\system32\cmd.exe. if I close that. Th sys repair says attempting to repair bt then that'll run all night n not change. This is my only comp right now. Gateway nv53 laptop. Desktops been down nvr got around to finishing it. I was gona get flash card to save backup this wknd :-( haha timings btch. Thanx for any help

Is this computer constantly on an active internet connection? Is your virus protection up to date?

I would recommend going to a different computer and downloading a malware removal program such as MalwareBytes Anti-Malware and running it before boot if possible.

What you are describing is the tell-tale signs of a virus, namely a trojan, affecting the explorer.exe process due to it starting to load the desktop (the mouse pointer) and then gets stuck.
  5. Idk I hv norton. The whole package av spyware anti theft etc etc n iv dealt w virus trojans b4 on old comps. Its hard to explains its not frozen. I can move th mose pointer when th sys repair is running I can hit th cancel n it says not to stop th repair bt it js nvr seems to get anywhere. Iv had it running for a cpl hours went to bed n it was still running. Its like it working on it but it doesn't finish doesn't get better an doesn't say can't b fixed. Lol

If you have the Norton CD, you can boot to it and run a pre-boot scan from the CD. I would recommend doing this because something has gotten onto the system and is preventing it from starting correctly.

I definitely would attempt the pre-boot scan either through Norton or by creating a Hirens Boot CD
  7. Update. Havnt gotten av cd yet. Did get reboot cd n still can't get to reboot bt I did remember something. Very last thing b4 this problem. I used a drive update program. Can't rem th name bt iv had it on comp for a while n used it several times w no problems bt when I was using it to update the drivers. I rem seeing th resolution changed in backround. Th icons got bigger. I figure th graphics driver got corrupted bt it won't let me boot in safe mode or last known config. Graphics card is in motherboard can't unplug. Would that cause th comp to not boot up? N if so any ideas how to fix?
  8. Solved. I downloaded a program. Hdd analyzer. It wasn't even what I thought it was gona be so I deleted it. When I did. It erased my whole hard drive. So I had to completely reinstall everything. Everythings back up an running. Jus toke longer cuz no cds or any kind of backup. Now I hv cds usbs an backed up online lol. Nvr again. Thanks everyone
