Cactus Canyon at Milwaukee auction today ($5,000 + 20%!)

There was a Cactus Canyon, dirty and some flipper issues, at the Milwaukee
auction today. No wear spots though. Went for $5,000 even. With the 20%
premium (after taxes and buyers premium) that's a cool $6,000. It was a
pretty big auction with lots of buyers. I'm surprised it went that high.

I talked to both the buyer and seller. Seller was a fairly large op (who's
still got some MM's left to sell), and the buyer was an op that also does
retail sales. Lots of people bidding on it though, wasn't like it was a 2
person bid war. Bidding opened at $4000, and I think there were at least 6
different people that got in bids.

I didnt think prices were that out of line, I think they were average
at best. The Cactus Canyon really drew a croud. It was really nice
seeing this lineup of pins at the Milwaukee show. It has been pretty
sad here lately. Anytime you see a TOM next to a CC and then a Stern
Playboy, and TZ all lined up next to each other, it almost appeared to
be the Auction you see on their fliers they hand out!!! (With th
eexception of the condition).... I didnt walk away with any pins on
this one, but After getting a much better than average Wh20 at their
last one for 650, I guess I have to be happy with this auction season
so far. On a side note, it does appear that SA is getting better with
their security and with the loading of merchandise into vehicles....

Prices were good if you wanted to keep it yourself & NEVER sell it..All
needed work except Dr. Dude which went for around $1500..To many people
that didn`t know there prices..

I dont really price stuff according to what I could sell it for, more
for what work I will have to put into it to make it enjoyable for me. I
gotta say that I have a 4,000 dollar LW3 if you were making comparisons
to the one today that went for 850.00. I thought that the Cactus Canyon
seemed inline with what we should expect to see (sadly). I thought a
lot of the buyers there were basing everything on Ebay prices (I heard
a lot of Ebay references in the crowd), the one I thought seemed to go
way high was the Harley Davidson, but hey were are in the Harley
Capitol of the world.....

yea, that thing was rough. all cab decals would need to be replaced.
Playfield may be nice underneth, but you couldnt' see it cuz of all the
dirt. Drop targets all had wear and the playfeild did have wear by the
center drop target. was a chip out of the wood. whoever bought it is
going to have a hard time getting their money back. After all the work
they are going to have to put into it. Seems prices were going high in
general today. Even a TOM with some serious trunk issues went for
$2600 after premiums.

Catch any other prices by chance?

Thanks,

actually, that CC was high, it went for 5500 which ended up as 6500. i
mean , mr pinball has a nice one on there for that price now. I buy
pins without the intention to sell, but if something happens finacially
or I find one I like better and have to make room for it. I'd want to
be able to always get my money back at least.

rob would have been struck down years ago if you got bad karma from
trying to rip people off....

I bought the Teed Off.

I got there late...well at 12:15. They never sell the pins that
early! So I missed the chance to check the pins out properly.

Anyway...Rob(auctioneer) got to the Teed Off and it wouldn't fire up.
He went into a rant about someone pulling a fuse and how he hoped the
bad karma would get the person ten times over for doing the deed.

I know I was taking a chance bidding that much for a non-working
pin(that I barely had a chance to look at). I bought the game
anyway. Loaded it up...and smashed my thumb between my pin dolly and
the truck bed...bloodied it up a little. Got home, took it out of the
truck, took off the playfield glass, and set it down...BAM glass
shattered. Went out to move my truck that was halfway in the garage
because of the rain, and my tire is flat. Big 'ol screw in it.

All I could think about was "Rob, you S.O.B., I WASN'T THERE! I
DIDN'T DO ANYTHING TO THAT MACHINE. You sent your voodoo hex the
WRONG way!"

BTW: It was a fuse problem. It will look good sitting next to NGG.
And as stated, I don't have much chance of making money on this one
when selling time comes, but sometimes "fun factor" and nostalgia come
with a price.

Did anyone else notice how tense Rob's employees were? Someone must
have really pissed him off before it started. I noticed it right away
and asked about it. All I got was FU@%8&% R@& is here...and lots of
grumbling. He hasn't been to Milwaukee in over a year...and I didn't
miss him.

Nothing like being told that these prices are horrible, and he's NEVER
coming back to Milwaukee. These machines are bringing TEN times the
money in Texas/California. Then says to remember that they'll be back
in November (close to Christmas - time to unload another semi of
Pachislos).

J.R. may not have the classic auctioneer voice, but at least he's
personable and friendly.

All in all, it wasn't a bad auction from the pin perspective.. The
"other" events at State Fair Park on Saturday gave us some live music,
women other than the few pin/video wives to gawk at, and better food
and beer than normal. Did anyone else buy some of that beef jerky
right outside the door? Damn good stuff! It went well with a glass
of Capital Amber from the microbrew tent.

Which one is Rob? The young, kinda short, Red Bull drinking guy or the
older cowboy looking guy?

>They were such a class group compared to SuperAuctions.

That's not saying very much! The folks that I have tried to talk to
from SA have had little or no class. I usually have my questions
answered with a cussing tirade instead.

I only wish someone could organize a not-for-profit pinball auction in
Orlando a few times a year. That 20% just adds insult to injury. I've
never bought a machine at an auction and probably never will. I just
go for the fun of it and to help keep friends from getting ripped off.

If you live in Florida; the South Florida Expo is available in December
to buy, trade and sell machines without the hassle of Superauctions or
the 20%. (www.sflape.com)

Maybe I should buy a whole bunch of pins, and then sell them on
consignment with SA when they make it to Texas, then they could just
send me the check for the three times the difference they say there is
in price there. Wait, isnt that what their employees do? I didnt see
many of them buying these machines on Saturday. My wife has been so
frustrated with JR because of his lack of speed, that when she saw Rob
she thought he was great. I told her, just wait, he will start getting
mad at the crowd, and sure enough, he didn't disappoint, she couldn't
believe it. A class act through and through..... On a side note,
speaking of all those damn Pachislos, I saw the Betty Boop there, and I
was reading somewhere that there will be more American Pachislos coming
out, does anyone know what kind of lineup there would be? I dont like
Pachislos mostly because everything looks like those damn anime
cartoons. I defintely would have interest in some cool American ones
like the Simpsons, Austin Powers, etc.. Stuff that would go along with
the pins in the basement....
